Telecom subscriber base grows to 987.31 million, BSNL registers negative growth

BSNL-BBAt the end of February 2015, total telephone connections in country increased to 987.31 million from 979.21 million at the end of January 2015. A total of 8.1 million connections were added during the month of February. Tele-density in the country now stands at 78.72%.
BSNL during the month of February lost 2.72 million subscribers which bring down its subscriber base to 94.23 million. BSNL has lost over 19 million users during 2014-15 and currently holds only 9.54% market share of total telephone connections in the country. In terms of active subscribers, only 69.59% of BSNL subscribers are active while Idea, Airtel, Vodafone, and Reliance have over 95% active subscribers. Broadband(wired) density in the country was at mere 1.23% with 15.39 million subscribers out of which 9.98 million BSNL connection.

Telecom subscriber base in the country is all set to breach 1 billion connection mark in coming months making India the second country in the world to reach this point after China. But state owned carrier BSNL continues to loss subscribers and market share in worlds fastest growing telecom market.
