TATA DOCOMO, the GSM brand of Tata Teleservices Limited, announced the commercial launch of its operations in Kolkata, hot on the heels of its launch in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Orissa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Mumbai, Rest of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh and Haryana.
The company’s Next-Gen GSM service started on a heady note, with TTSL Managing Director Anil Sardana lighting the ceremonial lamp along with TATA DOCOMO President Deepak Gulati, making Kolkata the 10th Circle to go live on the TATA DOCOMO network.
TATA DOCOMO also announced a novel “Pay-for-what-you-use” model for subscribers in Kolkata, with a pulse of one second, and a pricing of just 1 paisa per second. The company’s pan-India service rollout, which was kicked off in late June, will be completed this year itself.
In a message at the launch press conference, Mr Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Sons, said: “The value proposition offered by TATA-DOCOMO is a unique and revolutionary idea which symbolizes the spirit of innovation and inventive genius. This launch is truly a moment of triumph for the consumer. The launch of pay-per-use, per-second concept offered by TATA-DOCOMO will create a paradigm shift in the overall telecom experience for the customer and provide a service that is refreshingly different.”
Introducing the One-Second Pulse—Local, STD & ISD
TATA DOCOMO also unleashed a wide array of products and services, riding on the back of path-breaking innovative products and services, & never-before tariff options. “We had made a promise that we would bring to the country products and services that would redefine the telecom experience,” Mr Anil Sardana said. “It is a privilege to be fulfilling that promise in the Kolkata—where subscribers are discerning and seek transparency, innovation and differentiation. Our partnership with NTT DOCOMO will help us provide our subscribers with tremendous technological and service differentiation. Keeping in view the century of trust associated with the House of Tata, we are launching the concept of fare being fair. From today, TATA DOCOMO subscribers in Kolkata will be able to enjoy the benefits of pay-as-you-use,” he added.
NTT DOCOMO is acknowledged as the global leader in 3G technology and respected worldwide for its futuristic product innovations.
Announcing some very aggressive pricing and customization options, Mr Deepak Gulati said: “In a market that is cluttered with many operators and throws up confusing options, we will offer simplicity to consumers by being the country’s most transparent, innovative and liberating telecom brand. The first move on this front is to cut through the clutter and redefine the entire pricing paradigm—from Day One of our launch, we will work on a per-second pricing model for almost everything, be it voice calls, VAS services, IVR interactions. Above all, we promise to always listen to our subscribers.”
“We are focusing strongly on network superiority, coverage and service offerings. Our network footprint is the largest among all telecom operators in the Kolkata telecom district, at the time of launch. We have already made large investments in the Circle, and further expansion in this financial year itself is on the anvil,” Mr AP Sriram, TATA DOCOMO’s Chief Operating Officer for Kolkata & West Bengal, said. “TATA DOCOMO will unveil a portfolio of Value-Added Services that will reinvent mobile telephony in India, with products and services like diet-sms, Free Voicemail, Timed SMS Service, Free Missed Call Alerts, Call-me Tunes, etc—all of them customized to liberate and refresh our subscribers,” he added.
In a video-address, Mr Toshinari Kunieda, Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Global Business Division, NTT DOCOMO, said: “NTT DOCOMO has provided technical inputs to make the TATA DOCOMO GSM network world-class. Progressively, NTT DOCOMO shall bring to India the various products and services that we offer in Japan and many other countries—such as i-modeTM, Location-based Services (LBS) and mobile payment—and give TATA DOCOMO customers a flavor of tomorrow. TTSL and NTT DOCOMO are closely engaged in integrating technology, value-added services, products and applications through the mechanism of Business and Technology Cooperation Committee (BTCC). This should see TATA DOCOMO change the way India communicates.”
The company has earmarked an investment of $2 billion on its pan-India GSM network rollout.
Superior Technology and Network
From the day of the launch, the reach and coverage of the TATA DOCOMO network is greater in the Kolkata telecom district than that of any other operator at the launch stage. The TATA DOCOMO GSM mobile service will have extensive coverage across the Kolkata telecom district, offering users a superior and seamless telecom experience.
NTT DOCOMO has played a major role in the evolution of mobile telecommunications through its development of cutting-edge technologies and services. Over the years, technologists at NTT DOCOMO have defined industry benchmarks for 3G technology, as also products and services such as i-mode and a plethora of lifestyle-enhancing applications. Today, while most global telecom players are only beginning to talk of 4G technology and its possible applications, NTT DOCOMO has already recorded a downlink transmission rate of 250 Mbps over a high-speed wireless network in an outdoor test of an experimental system for Super 3G, also known as LTE, and is targeting to complete the commercial development by the end of 2009. This will hold TATA DOCOMO in good stead as it launches GSM services.

@S-SEN wait wait! u can’t count them yet let them esteblish a bit,if the problem still persists than it is the pricewar effect and in the line of being different they r losing their way in respect of their commitment towards providing the quality service

Ashish Goyal October 12, 2009 at 2:54 pm
Reliance always having no one in its value propositions,but the main fact is that the company is never think for retailers and distributor who helps them to be in todays platform….Reliance is thief and nothing less or more than this
kaushik October 12, 2009 at 11:47 am
has docomo launched in West Bengal Circle ? their website says nothing about WB
Suchisuvra Sen October 11, 2009 at 10:51 pm
Reliance have 50 paisa even in incoming and outgoing in roaming location.
Suchisuvra Sen October 11, 2009 at 10:51 pm
Reliance have 50 paisa even in incoming and outgoing in roaming loaction.
kaushik October 11, 2009 at 10:41 pm
initially i think idea is winner in kolkata than docomo.Bcoz for 1 year all local calls 40 paise and STD 60 paise by idea is very good plan.IDEA signal will surely improve as the day goes and idea can give reliance a big competition in simply reliance plan.
now lets see whether TATA docomo also brings normal per minute plan
kaushik October 11, 2009 at 10:35 pm
i get TATA DOCOMO and IDEA full signal at my home
ishan October 11, 2009 at 10:30 pm
@Suchisuvra Sen
you inform tata docomo about the network problem..just call the customer care or you can also send an email to them.yes as a customer of tata docomo u should have get the network coverage in ur area..so plz inform them about the network problem.
Suchisuvra Sen October 11, 2009 at 10:23 pm
I am not expecting full coverage but 1-2 signal bar and good offer Onenet unlimited as Idea have in Orrisa at 149.Same from Docomo and Idea……….
Suchisuvra Sen October 11, 2009 at 10:21 pm
DOCMO to DOCOMO unlimited or cheap call rate,STV 14 is not good for us, as Vodafone 39 is not much different from it.Tata need to have more cheap night calling card at this level.
Suchisuvra Sen October 11, 2009 at 10:19 pm
That’s not brother,I need at least 1 or 2 tower from Tata DOCOMO,not full coverage at this level.But I am not getting any signal in my home location Barasat
Agnivo October 11, 2009 at 10:06 pm
@Suchisuvra Sen
You are doing like the uncompromising customer… go on.
sumonta October 11, 2009 at 9:39 pm
stv 48 of Reliance gsm was….
rs validity Rgsm to R(gsm,cdma) Rgsm to R(gsm,cdma) other local call
48 6 months 15p/min during night 35p/min
5p/min
now stv14 of TATA DOCOMO is
rs validity all TATA all TATA all TATA all TATA during night
14*6=84 6 moths 60p/min(1p/1sec) 12p/min(1p/5sec)
i expect much from TATA DOCOMO..
Suchisuvra Sen October 11, 2009 at 8:41 pm
But at least Tata should have one or 2 bar, I am not expecting full coverage.
Abhi October 11, 2009 at 6:56 pm
Yes,you are right,Agnivo.It is already mentioned to the guy that when Aircel was launched,it had one of the worst networks.Call drops after 2-3(that too all calls!),almost no connectivity with Airtel & Vodafone were serious issues with Aircel.Compared to that,Tata Docomo has much much better network.Tata is not Alladin’s chirag..Remember Rome was not built in a day..
Agnivo October 11, 2009 at 12:55 pm
@Suchisuvra Sen
Just sit tight, mate… Don’t waste your time trying hard when we all know it’d take a few days to a month at most to get all this sorted by TATA. It is your backup SIM isn’t it? My request, just hold on a bit, it’d improve surely.
ishan October 11, 2009 at 12:41 pm
Aircel’s 175 rate cutter is better than tata docomo’s STV 14..aircel STV 175 offers 2000 min to local aircel(thereafter 15p/min),other local calls @ 30p/min,validity 30days.
even vodafone offers 300 local night minutes from VF-VF with 39 bonus card,validity 30 days.better than docomo’s night pack..
Suchisuvra Sen October 11, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Ek noraka chor, ek sms lokopar 4 vej rahai,agar maikisko sms dalato 3-4 bar jarahai,kuch nehi jara raha hai,Ttata bawkas hai, DO the new type chori………….Tata chor………….

It’s too bad network,I have sent 2 sms,they cut down 1.20 from me but sms not sent,now no sms to be sent anyone no signal for 1 hour. They are just sucking money.My request to all not to give your foot at tata’s trap.Whenever Tata don’t have signal how can you send 100 sms.Idea have better signal here.
Suchisuvra Sen October 11, 2009 at 10:23 am
TATA DOCOMO brings to you Night Pack at a special price of Rs 14.
MRP Benefit Processing Fee(Rs) Service Tax(Rs) Tariff Validity (Days)
14 Get all On Net Local** TATA to TATA mobile calls @ 1p/ 5 sec from 11pm to 7am. 12.69 1.31 30
Suchisuvra Sen October 11, 2009 at 10:06 am
I have to live at street to get 2 signal bar for Tata.In my area VODAFONE,AIRTEL,AIRCEL,BSNL,RELIANCE,IDEA have full tower.They have sucked my RS/-99
Suchisuvra Sen October 11, 2009 at 9:33 am
Why do I take Docomo if I fail to talk anyone.It’s competitive market operator need have at least standard network.What is the difference between RGSM and Docomo.I am in this once told RGSM have worst service.Now I am telling it really developed for a week.I have a talk with RGSM network person,he told me they are setting 200 towers in Kolkata within few month.
What is difference between Aircel and DOCOMO.I am giving Aircel 80 and Tata 20,just for their own innovative plan.
Suchisuvra Sen October 11, 2009 at 9:27 am
I have taken 2 connection yesterday,one for my father and one for me.I have told my papa to take Docomo.But he forbid me to take this for him.So I take Aircel for him.Now if I tell him that Tata have good network………………
Most worst network don’t take it just now,take 2 month after.My suggestion is to you take Aircel or RGSM(50 paisa incoming,outgoing in roaming).If you good network then go for Vodafone and Airtel.Even BSNL is giving same as TATA pay per second.
Suchisuvra Sen October 11, 2009 at 9:23 am
@Piyush
Thanks to all you are backing Tata Docomo which have worst network,not only that noisy network,may they make their network good,but it’s a long run matter to setup towers.CDMA and GSM technology is completely different.Reliance CDMA is no 1 network but GSM had bad service even few weeks back.But they really developed now.Aircel have well enough network.My question is here if Tata fails to give good network why they don’t have any good offer as Reliance have done.Don’t be sleepwalker and make people fool.I have taken their connection yesterday,and seeing worst network at my roof top.My question is that what is difference between TATA and Aircel have same offers.But in my home Aircel is too good.It’s my good fortune I have not refereed it to my friend.
Suchisuvra Sen October 11, 2009 at 9:12 am
Tata DOCOMO bakwas hai, maerato pura paisa gaya, my request to all don’t take it until they made good network.Here everyone opposed me when I told them RGSM have better network than anyone who is giving cheap rates.Sometimes I think you are sleepwalkers. Why don’t you tell here Tata have worst network.If u really interested then use Aircel.I have 2 Aircel connection,that are working so fine.Tata DOCOMO have only 1-2 signal bar,most of the time I am loosing signal
kaushik October 11, 2009 at 2:33 am
@Suchisuvra Sen
good advertisement for reliance done by you. But people in kolkata know how bad is rGSM and the persons still using rGSM says its service is the worst in kolkata.Now tata and idea are brand new company.Within few months tata and idea will beat reliance in coverage easily.even aircel network is better than rGSM
ishan October 11, 2009 at 1:19 am
@Suchisuvra Sen
NTT DOCOMO is a pioneer in mobile communication..the first 3G network was launched by NTT DOCOMO in japan in the year of 2001..so we can keep our faith on tata docomo as far as network related or some technical issues are concerned.tata docomo is a new comer in kolkata and it is very difficult to provide good network from the first day..i think in the next 2-3 months they will be able to solve their network related problem.
altaf October 11, 2009 at 1:02 am
^^^^^
how can a CDMA & GSM network be same thats a common sense but some people are super smart here u r using TATA DOCOMO(kolkata)?
Piyush October 11, 2009 at 12:26 am
You are right,altaf..
This is not the way to condemn any company.
I think the person has forgot the time when aircel was launched in Kolkata.It tried to lure with unlimited local calls at 246 voucher,but it was next to impossible to call on Airtel and Vodafone.And,call used to disconnect after 2-3 minutes…And it withdrew it within 15-20 days.
Anyways,aircel is still not very good and better check other posts to know about network of Reliance GSM.
Tata Docomo is new,and has best network when compared to other networks (at the time of launch)..And nowhere Tata has mentioned that its network is same as CDMA.
Both are different and Tata has never claimed that both are same n/w…
Anirban Bhattacharjee October 11, 2009 at 12:22 am
DOCOMO & Idea effect
Aircel now offer all std call 1paise/sec lifetime. Before its only introductory offer for 2 months. Local same as 1paise/sec.
Also Aircel launch ISD call on per second basis.
11paise/Sec – USA (Fixed Phone & Mobile) & UK/Australia/Europe (Fixed Phone)
15paise/Sec – Bangladesh/Nepal/Gulf (Fixed Phone & Mobile) & UK/Australia/Europe(Mobile)
Agnivo October 11, 2009 at 12:01 am
Tata is backed by NTT docomo – the pioneer in next generation technology; in the long run this network has the potential to outrun others technically. It’s just a matter of time before they sort out the network. Still too early to comment, they will be setting more towers and tuning up the network in coming months. Just be patient.
altaf October 10, 2009 at 11:50 pm
man wht r u trying to do? want to convince people that TATA IS BAD or want to advertise abt aircel people are smart enough to take decision on their own so try to keep ur decision upto urself
Suchisuvra Sen October 10, 2009 at 10:23 pm
Tata have bad network with 1paisa/sec plan,why do u take their connection when Aircel have too good network with same offer.
Suchisuvra Sen October 10, 2009 at 10:22 pm
Relianceto soneke chirya hai,Tata jaisa nehi hai sabko bolrahai same network as CDMA.I am here saying you Tata CDMA and GSM is not same service.So don’t be fool.
Suchisuvra Sen October 10, 2009 at 10:21 pm
Pls use Relaince GSM it’s really good service just now,in response to other network(Vodafone,Airtel,BSNL)
Suchisuvra Sen October 10, 2009 at 10:20 pm
I am from Barasat,Nabapally Area.Tata DOCOMO have worst network I have seen ever.My request to all don’t take DOCOMO connection.Aircel have too good connection use it.Tata signal is from Hridaypur,that is 6km from house.

@atanu
Would you mind posting the link in here.. It would be helpful!!
atanu October 9, 2009 at 2:07 pm
@Duane
Dear duane you are right the SAME plan has >30 lacs customers across India!
but in kolkata circle alredy cdma(mts)and gsm(aircel) give us the offer 1paise/ 2 sec and 30 paise/mnt. all the plan not aply in all the circle, because Kolkata – cheapest metro in India where one can get non-veg lunch at Rs 10 only – is also a tough market for mobile operators. ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) here is the lowest compared to other Indian metro cities. Virgin Mobile, another Tata Tele venture, also fails here. Remember MTS’s lifelong 30p offer is only in Kolkata, in Southern India it’s 49p/min – so MTS hits the right chord – cheapest tariff for the cheapest metro !
atanu October 9, 2009 at 2:02 pm
@San
Go to your nearest retailer, or tata comunicatin bld(vsnl).
atanu October 9, 2009 at 1:59 pm
@San
pls see the website and then comments.(under prepaid)
no need to go Tata Communication Bld. (formaly-VSNL)
San October 9, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Anybody knows where is Tata Docomo’s office is in Kolkata?? It hasn’t been updated in their website yet. Or visit the same VSNL building like Tata Indicom??
Duane October 9, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Commercial launch is the formal launch announcement and is independent of SIM card availability. Regarding their plans being “not attractive” the SAME plan has >30 lacs customers across India!
@atanu
San October 9, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Tata Docomo has similar plans for other circles too. I think they don’t need competition as their tariff is in anyways hatke. They pioneered the idea of 1p/sec in India and they are getting good response from customers all over India.
kaushik October 9, 2009 at 1:37 pm
@atanu
i think TATA waiting for IDEA to launch their service.After seeing IDEA offers TATA may revised their tariffs
atanu October 9, 2009 at 1:30 pm
duane, i can not understand of tata’s launching. today they announced the commercial launching but sim card are redy to use in kolkata from 5 th oct at 05:00 p.m. but their plan are not attractive to getting customer in kolkata.
