SAMSUNG UNVEILS WORLD’S 1st UNLOCKED CDMA “OMH” MOBILE PHONE

SAMSUNG UNVIEL WORLD'S FRIST UNLOCKED CDMA OMH MOBILE PHONESamsung, a leading CDMA mobile handset market player, today announced the launch  of the world’s first OMH™ phone,  “Mpower 699″, in the Indian market in co-operation with Qualcomm. The revolutionary OMH technology, available on the CDMA platform, gives mobile customers the flexibility to buy a CDMA handset and SIM cards from various CDMA operators of their choice.

Samsung’s “Mpower 699″ is the world’s first CDMA phone to offer this flexibility to customers since the network settings for the CDMA connection have shifted from the phone to the OMH SIM card. In fact, all Indian CDMA operators are providing a free OMH* SIM card with distinct OMH mark along with this Samsung OMH handset in the initial phase.

Announcing the launch of Samsung Mpower 699 in the Indian market

Mr. Jung Soo Shin, President & CEO, Samsung South West Asia HQ stated, “This OMH launch represents a paradigm shift in the dynamics of the CDMA ecosystem with consumers now having the flexibility to choose an operator at their will at any point in time. OMH empowers a CDMA customer as never before and will serve to fuel the growth in the CDMA handset market. We at Samsung are proud to be leading this innovation with Qualcomm and appreciate the support given by CDMA operators towards popularizing OMH.”

“Qualcomm congratulates Samsung for pioneering the world’s first OMH handset as well as our CDMA operator partners for launching OMH SIM cards,” said Kanwalinder Singh, Senior Vice President of Qualcomm Inc and president of Qualcomm India and South Asia. “OMH handsets, such as Samsung’s feature rich Mpower 699, play a central role in offering Indian subscribers the freedom, flexibility and choice to easily change or upgrade their handsets. With currently more than 100 million CDMA subscribers, we expect OMH to play a key role in driving the growth of CDMA in India.”

The switch over process to new OMH SIM cards from existing R-UIM/SIM connections is very easy, and the new OMH phone also supports the existing R-UIM/SIM for voice and SMS as well as data services. In addition, the OMH SIM too is backward compatible to support all previously launched CDMA handsets which support R-UIMs/SIMs.

“At Samsung, last year we took the first step towards giving consumers flexibility in CDMA by launching our Mpower series handset to work with CDMA connections from operators Reliance Mobile, Tata Indicom and Virgin Mobile, MTNL and BSNL. Today, true to our ‘Next is What’ philosophy, we have taken a significant step forward with the launch of the OMH compliant Mpower 699,” stated Mr. Sunil Dutt, Country Head, Samsung Telecom Division, Samsung India Electronics Ltd.

The introduction of OMH will lead to common development standards and interoperability for all CDMA network operators globally. “Supporting OMH significantly expands the choice of handsets available to CDMA consumers and leads to faster, new product introduction within the CDMA space,” stated Mr. Shin. All future Samsung CDMA handsets in the open market will support OMH.

In addition to supporting OMH, the Samsung Mpower 699 comes with a 1.3MP Camera with video recording and advanced multimedia features such as audio player, video player and stereo FM radio. The new OMH handset also comes with an advanced Mobile Tracker, dedicated camera key, and a 2GB MicroSD card. The OMH compliant Samsung Mpower 699 is priced at Rs 7100/-

    Hy,

    I am using a Nokia 6235 CDMA Hand set since 2006. It has open CDMA service that mean you can use any CDMA SIM. I test it in Reliance & TATA. Whether it is a OMH.

    Samsung SCH-F699.

    Unfortunately, I am not able to use the data services. On checking with Samsung, I am informed that reliance must have given me a SIM with the OMH logo on it. Surprisingly, the team at the TVH and also the call centre reprsentatives are not aware of such a Card.

    It is almost a month now since I did the upgradation and reliance personnel are yet to solve my the issue.

    recently upgraded my handset from non-sim based LGAD6335 to sim-based Samsung SCH-F699.

    TVH, Paras Towers Chennai gave me a new sim card to be used with the new phone.

    OMH Supported ruim have not been launched by any cdma operators like tata ,reliance, so you cannot use the data services like mms, internet, except the voice features, so have to wait till the cdma operators lauch the OMH supported ruim or force samsung to negotiate with the cdma operators. But Samsung After sales Service is Pathetic they wont respond to your query, they are more interested in sales

    I have purchased a Samsung MPOwer 699 World First OMH Supported handset,but my biggest problem is i cant use the data services as it required a OMH Supported RUIM.I have contacted Reliance technical and customer support team but they are unaware of it.When it will be available is still a big question.
    Although Samsung in their press released has said that it will have backward compatibility for the old sim including the data services but still there handset doesnt supports the old sim.
    Samsung should have confirm with concern cdma operators regarding the availability of OMH RUIM card before launching in the Indian market.

    I have also purchased a Samsung MPOwer 699 World First OMH Supported handset,but the problem is i cant use the data services as it required a OMH Supported RUIM.I have contacted both Reliance and Tata but there technical and customer support team are unaware of it.Although TATA has collborated with Oberthur Technologies to launch their OMH supported RUIM in Indian Markets, but when its still a big question.
    Although Samsung in their press released has said that it will have backward compatibility for the old sim including the data services but still there handset doesnt supports the old sim.
    Either have to wait till OMH Ruim are launched in the Indian Market or take them to the Consumer court is the only option

    @saket
    Prior to OMH, only a small subset of operator specific setting used to reside on the UIM (most were on the mobile itself), so the the UIM functionality in CDMA was not nearly as powerful or useful as SIM cards in GSM. Hence OMH sim have been introduced to fill this gap. Now ALL settings related to the service provider sit on the UIM alone, hence allowing complete portability of the mobile between different operators.

  • saket August 29, 2009 11:13 pm

    what is special in OMH, even current UIM are supported by spice dual and all other handset too,
    even previosly launched samsung mpower support all uim and omh sim

    @RDB
    “but i doubt they(mtnl.mts.r comm, indicom) r offering OM SIMs !”

    As per this point….OMH opearators & maufacturars asures everyone that we dont need OMH simcards from CDMA operators…because the existing CDMA UIM cards are also compatible with this types of OMH handsets for calling,messaging & for data download…so we have both options present..we can use UIM/OMH simcards both…& one notisable thing is that all operators provides OMH simcards with this phone for free of cost as per ur choice…

  • arun vrma August 29, 2009 8:50 am

    omh plear

  • RDB August 29, 2009 8:25 am

    well this is really good for new cdma customers (read MTS customers), but i doubt they(mtnl.mts.r comm, indicom) r offering OM SIMs ! but the price shud b less to compete wth zte,haier etc’s cheap phones, many people like only phone, not extra features, as its samsung hope a low priced featureless OM handset comin soon

  • deepak August 29, 2009 2:22 am

    Looks nothing new as far as specs are concerned (costly too?). Wish there were better and more handset choices available in CDMA front.
