India has seen a delayed 3G rollout. But the fact is 3G services are not getting that much of traction from customers. Many blame Govt. auction which hiked the 3G license and spectrum cost many times than the global average, and as a result operators cannot offer 3G data at a low cost.
All private operators are offering data plans at almost same price, and no price differentiation makes zero competition. State owned BSNL & MTNL offer 3G at a lower cost but too much issues and inadequate customer services keep users at a bay.
In coming days 4G services will be rolled out in India, it’s a time when 3G is still not mature, and there is no sign that 3G can gain many attraction before 4G launch. So why is 3G skipped by most users who are looking for faster internet access option?
TelecomTalk conducts a poll to find out the reasons behind the ignorance towards 3G.
We also like to know about the 3G devices.
* Here 3G is used to mean HSPA services provided by GSM operators.

Ignorance???
ignorance of whom?
1. Of Govt. which charged too much from the companies?
2. Of Operators who just thought that customers will adopt 3G at any price?
3. Of Customers who don’t find value for money in 3G?

Jagannath December 19, 2011 at 6:34 pm
@kankan
Hey!
Vodafone allows pay as you go plan for 3G Services, just SMS “ACT 3G” to 144 (toll free) & you will be activated for 3G on a zero rental plan with access to all 3G services including Video calls. I am currently using it in Delhi.
Ganesh December 19, 2011 at 1:02 pm
The main culprit is the government and it’s rubbish policies! They increase the spectrum prices so damn high that most new operators can’t afford 3G spectrum. Also the selling of spectrum state-wise instead of region wise! If an operator can pay a good amount, then that operator should be given spectrum a part of india (like southern or northern etc) instead of states!

2G took a decade to evolve,3G will take its time too, present infrastructure in india as far as i see is not favorable to make 3G as widespread as 2G,also coverage of 3G BTS is not as far reaching as that of 2G,so we need more of 3G BTS but that not only requires heavy investment in mobile equipment but much more is required to upgrade the support system too, that’s a reason why we find 3G services of all operators good only in patches, and when we talk of 4G there also all above stated points will have to be addressed to make it attractive and affordable at the same time, also govt. too has a role to play, only future will tell if 3G can survive when 4G comes or both face the same consequence.
Prithvi December 19, 2011 at 9:39 am
3G has not served its purpose and now the costly auctions are making the companies charge humungous amounts for recharges. Its like when Rs.16/min was charged in 1998 for cellphone users. Its laughable that Rs.700 odd is charged for 1GB … it should be for 30GB at least, then all the services can make sense otherwise wait it out for 4G .. it will be as costly but will make sense because of the much much better speeds.

To ALL users :
In other countries, people enjoy each type of technology (2G, GPRS, EDGE, 3G, 3.5G, 4G and so on) before upgrading to a new technology.
.
But in this technologically slum country (india) only the technology gets upgraded preventing people from using it !!!!. This is the situation in india.
kankan December 19, 2011 at 12:17 am
you are right bro Vodafone is one of most cheater company in Indian telecom, it is a type of company who charges for network also(you have to recharge for 3G network), worthless company as well as worthless 3G plan, speed and sevices atleast in Kolkata.

I was awaiting 3G in India from the day I came to know abt it, but nw even after it is here, the factors that keep me away from it are.
1. PRICE: I get the fact that operators had payed a huge sum to acquire spectrum but charging such exorbitant amount wont fetch faster returns. Realise that peaople can do without 3G. If expensive, they’ll simply skip. Operators should concentrate on revenue thru large turnover than thru large margin…
2. NETWORK: Why would anyone want to use Edge wen they have payed 15 times its amount for 3G???!!! Living in the area like Bull Temple road if I face such issues, whr else should I expect proper network?! They’ve got to improve coverage and quality.
And yeah. Reducing the FUP of 95/98 plans to 1GB wont make your 3G look cheaper or move towards… It’ll just force people to reduce their usage on 2G… Until 4G, I’ll stick to Wifi for my phone… Hope 4G wont be this disappointing…
Lovegin December 18, 2011 at 11:49 pm
3g is more costlier than other dsl broaband services.people are likely to reject these services .but the operators reduces the rates they surely will come and take a part of this service .the charge should be like for 1 gb 200rs .

I am using MTNL Trump 3G, 3.6 Mbps at Rs.4500 for 6 months which equals to Rs.750 per month, truly unlimited, no FUP.. I get speeds of 2.3 Mbps at all times of the day and around midnight I get around 2.7 Mbps. now that’s what I call true value for money, with quality service. keep it up MTNL

U said it, the operators might have shelled out a lot of money in great anticipation during the pre-scam era (?) expecting windfalls. But much waters have since flown down the Ganges and the expectations of operators and subscribers too fell flat /swept away ! As for the MTNL/BSNL they are least bothered about the losses because these are billed or rather PASSED in deceit (one way or other) even on to the unwary common man loitering on the road. Your survey will be an eye opener for everybody on the boat. Expect similar surveys on contemporary topics !

IDRIS December 18, 2011 at 9:22 pm
Vodafone like service providers actually are real culprits who prevent users from 3G services one cant go for pay as you go for Video Call Facility, but I appreciate Idea,Tata Docomo and Airtel who are more customer oriented as a result are doing good business. If I was a teleccom minister I would have cancelled the Vodafones Licence…!
3G December 18, 2011 at 9:17 pm
3G is still a losing game for the operators only because of their poor strategy. Their pricing policy are based on the western market, but they dont understand the fact that Indians & the Indian Market is different.
If you look at the wire-line Broadband segment, the availability is very limited. While, the 3G which is over-the-air has got a lot of plus points than the Broadband. But still the operators are not able to change the game. People still goes for Broadband. They should do something otherwise the money they spent on Spectrum-auction is just a waste.
The operators should try to understand what type of plans should the customers require and launch such ones. The social media could help a lot in understanding the customer-requirements.
Sharath December 18, 2011 at 9:03 pm
As per my study on the polls when 60% of the users are already using the 3G handset and the data card and feel that the price is not affordable is somethig intresting to think that all user always think for the 1GB @ 99 or 1GB @ 199 which is something very difficlut for any operator to provide, all operator have designed the Dongle and the 3G plans according to the susbcriber base and the user using the facility still 60% of the user are still not aware what is 3G? users are happy with the 2G speed, and once they get addicated to the 3G ist very diffcult to use 2G, and the handset manufacturs who have the 3G handset launched in the market can offer the 3G handset @ the competative price.
RDB December 18, 2011 at 8:50 pm
Hi PD thanks for your appreciation! Video calls is something which people ignores mostly because of cost and handsets.
Apart from the pricing of video calls, operators like Vodafone restricts video calls to a user who activated 3G on his no, unless he make a minimum 3G recharge. BSNL and MTNL offers 3G video call at low rate, and it is available for 2G users also.
Recent IDC report says Android turns to be top smartphone OS in India representing 42% of the market of India. And most android phones do not have front camera. Even those came from operators (Idea’s 2 and Vodafone’s Smart) do not have front cam!

Appreciate TT and RDB for the Survey ! The subscribers are very much prudent enough to be more cost effective in availing services. Majority uses only voice services and those opt for data cards are also seemingly in good numbers. But hardly any takers for the much hyped VIDEO CALLS.Of course the the Rs.3/- min is a deterrent factor. Unfortunately no service providers give it a chance by at least imitating the PSUs cost-line ! The handset compatibly is another factor, but the cost is not at all affordable. Let it be 4G or 5G or 6G…. the writing on the wall is clear ! There is a need to change strategy. Providers will get more revenue if cost is reduced, I mean the volume of usage (video calls) will increase and in such a case people will go for a handset change too taking into consideration the cost ! Again record my thanks to TT for this venture !

I want to ask one simple question when companies provide all 2G plans circle wise then why not 3G plan as cost of every circle is less so the circle which cost them less should be provided cheaper plans take the example to jammu kashmir circle which cost nearly 50 crore UP East cost 350 UP West 520 crore to the companies and delhi which nearly cost 2200 crore(sorry if amount differs understand the concept) then why should the people of both the places say same amount when cost is less

Most of the subscribers satisfies with 2G data plans just because of it’s cheapest one where 3G plan is 10X costlier that 2G plans for 2GB of data exchange.
So if we choose 2G plans we can browse around the month, but 3G will end up in 2-3 days.

There are a lot of Unlocked-data cards available in the market. Such cards are available in Ernakulam so it ll surely be available in Bangalore. Huawie ‘s may not be available but there are other good brands. Cost from Rs. 1200 and above…
3G December 18, 2011 at 1:34 pm
India is a price-conscious market
and
so the only option now available with the operators is to decrease the 3G tariff, thus adding more & more customers to the 3G segment thereby gaining revenue.
3G December 18, 2011 at 1:28 pm
-Current 2G packs 2GB @ Rs. 50 with 256kbps(although some operators caps at 128kbps)speed.
-3G packs 2GB @ Rs. 750 with 7.2mbps.
-> Why cant the operators provide data with speed variants??
that is..the same 2GB data at
Rs. 100 (512 kbps)
Rs. 200 (1mbps)
Rs. 350 (2mbps) and so on….
-> Different people use Data for different purposes. For a person who browses more and has enough time for it…he will be comfortable with speeds of 512 kbps
while for who download more they may need more speed …
So depending on the purpose they can opt for packs based on speed.

Lack of OMD Open Market Data cards such as Huawie freely available in the retail market with a price tag of Rs 1000 to Rs 1500 (7.2 MBPS). Huawie is a very good Brand for Mobile Broadband as of now it is providing is data cards only with Operators (idea, Aircel,Airtel,Reliance and Tata Docomo). i had bought Idea E 1732(E173ui)data card which i am unable to unlock it. i have a very Bad experience for idea 3G services.
I think i have done a great mistake by taking a idea data card, as their is some goof up idea has a Roaming Pact with Airtel for Providing 3G services in Bangalore(karnataka). GOVT is planing to cancel the 3G Licence in the Roaming State.
please tell me how to unlock the Huawie E 1732(E173ui)data card. to Use any SIM 2G or 3G Services.

Companies should start realizing that 3G is a losing investment. So they should start minimizing the losses before 4G comes. They can do this by increasing the customer base by offering ultra cheap plans.
One thing I don’t understand is why these companies are not afraid of Reliance. They have seen what Reliance Infocomm had done (in 2003) and they know what Reliance Infotel can do (in 2012).

Just calculate the interest of the Rs67000 crore. And you are thinking they have to reduce the price…. ha ha ha ……Just Imagine….
answer——why not price reduction should b there only due to that fact they have spent appxm rs 67000 crore .who said that in current plans of 3 g they will b easily recover thier money spent on spectrum ..in current scenerio i m NOT able top understanD how these company will recover thier cost spent on 3 g spectrum .it is wrong to suggest that …NOW SPECTRUM IS IN THE HAND OF TELECOM COMPANIES AND WE KNOW THAT FACT DEMAND FOR 3 G IS VERY HIGH ..BUT DUE TO FACT OF HIGH PRICING NO CUSTOMER IS COMING TO TAKE .. IT IS MATTER OF DEMAND AND SUPPLY
THERE IS LOT OF DEMAND WAITING FOR 3 G BUT THEY WILL BUY IT ONLY AT RIGHT PRICING U CAN SAY THAT WHICH THEY CONSIDER AFFORDABLE PRICE FOR THEM … KEEPING SPECTRUM IN HAND WOULD NOT BE PROFITABLE FOR COMPANIES ……GOOD LUCK

Tarun Dhingra December 18, 2011 at 11:19 am
what i think 3 g is not accepted by the customer due to —
1———not affordable plans ..
2——– user have the option of 2 g in this they have to pay only 1/7 to 1/10 then why anyone would use 3 g where data is not unlimited … had the user not had option of 2 g
then telecom company easily would have looted the customer ……..in india custmer can compromise with speed if they have to pay less 1/7 to 1/10 …
\\\\
3——- broadband is the next best option ….. in india wire data is considered the best option then wireless …
4——- evdo plans r there best suited for customer like bsnl 750 plan unlimited for one month
5— any company will have to bring some good plan to suit customer like —-
low data user —-where he checks only mails or surf some site i gb is enough —-
100 would be good enough for 1 gb to attract the customer
medium —–where 3 gb is quit enough that can be charged at the rate of 300 to 350
unlimited —–where he uses lot of data
then in that case
plan maximum of 750 will be enough … i know this plan is possible for companies but after there may b capping after 8 to 10 gb they will be converted into 256 to 400 kbps speed …..unlimited plans are not possible becuase if they offer such type of plans there will b network jam in that case low end and mediuma user will sufer and there wil be less speed and frequent disconnection so unlimited is not possible .. in long run it will affect customer ….
so company sholud learn the lesson form 2 g
where chareges were so high and only rich person were using iot result —–huge loss to telecom companies …but when it was made affordable loss was converted in profit due to user affordable plan….. so try to attract the village and small town customer not to ac rooms customer becuse in india there is huge potential for growth in the small town and villages so companies try to consider that facet come with some above mentioned plan which can tackle the customer and it would be more beneficial for u and for user also … u will be easily able to recover your licence fee and making handsome profit ….
IN INDIA BSNL SHOULD TRY TO BRING DOWN THE PRICE OF 3 G PLANS IF THERE IS GOOD COMPETTION THAT WOULD B BENEFICIAL FOR COMPANY ITSELF ……….
BUT I THINK IN INDIA COMPETTION IS LACKING .. CONSIDER THAT FACE
CALL RATE — PER SECOND PLAN —AIRTEL –1.2 PERM SECOND
IDEA 1.2
VODAFONE 1.2 (THESE THREE COMPANIES HIKED THE PRICES SIMULTANOUSLY ALL OVER INDA BASES.SO I DOUBT ABT COMPETTION AMONG THESE THERE )
DUCOMO 1.2
BSNL 1.2(IN MY CIRCLE IT IS 1 PAISA )
ONLY SMALL COMPANIES ARE OFFERING 1PAISA AND LESS CALL RATE PLAN
ONLY BSNL THE COMPANY WHICH CAN BRING COMPETTION IF THEY TRY WITH CLEAN HAND OTHER WISE THERE WILL B ANOTHER PRICE HIKED IN FUTURE
SO WHERE IS COMPETTION WHICH IS NOT GOOD FOR INDUSTRY AND ALSO FOR CUSTOMER ……
ONE DAY THESE SMALL COMPANIES WILL BE EATEN BY BIG COMPANIES AND AGAIN THERE WILL B PRICE HIKE BECAUSE IT WILL CREATE MORE LESS COMPETTION …….
SO GOVERMENT POLICY SHOULD B OF MAKING GOOD COMPETTION ENVIRONENT ………
ALL THE BEST ALL TELECOM COMPANIES TRY TO LEARN SOMTHING FROM THIS POST THIS WIL GIVE U PICTURE ABT WHAT CUSTOMER EXPECT FRO U ………

4G is future , pitty on who paid billion of dollar towards 3g spectrum ,in long run 3G will benifit than as there 2G spectrum is not enough for voice now a days, with 3g spectrum they can provide voice and sms , that the main thing in auction
No spectrum in 2G space that why 3G gonna huge appeal, and BWA spectrum gets very low price compared to 3G.
Deependra December 18, 2011 at 10:58 am
In my opinion 4G too may not be affordable. Companies have already invested a very huge capital to start 3G services. They have to deploy advance 4G equipments for that they have to again make a huge investment. Cost of equipments and its deployment will be less than 3G but definitely increase the debt of operators.
Operators are still not able to get enough return from 3G services. 3G is still not matured which has limited coverage and unaffordable for the mass of the people.
All these will stretch the liabilities of operators which may restrict them to offer their services at cheaper rates.

For all TT users I’m using photon plus from past one and half years. There is not a single issue regarding network or slow connection. When TATA launched DOCOMO 3G in karnataka I tested, speed of 7.2 mbps but I can’t happy with the speed and lot of interruptions in the speed there is no constant speed like evdo. Kindly note all of you that evdo players are not paying the single pie to our respected govt. So kindly don’t compare the evdo with 3G. IF in case 3G operators reduce the price (to little) then evdo operators give them a full fight like RS 500 unlimited speed at 3.1 mbps. Also consider that TATA and MTS are rolled out Rev B in some cities and calculating here also they are not paid a single pie like 3G players (RS 67000 crore) Just calculate the interest of the Rs67000 crore. And you are thinking they have to reduce the price…. ha ha ha ……Just Imagine….

It is only in India where technology is being upgraded without even reaching the people. LOL LOL LOL. india – a technologically slum country.

Airtel was the first to launch 2G services, but prices were something like Rs 32 for outgoing call, and Rs 20 for incoming call. Reliance joined the party, prices came down, DoCoMo came prices hit the rock bottom. Now when the companies are unable to get customers for 3G, they are blaming the Govt. Airtel sucked the blood of customers as early bird. When reliance came prices came down, and mobile communication was accessible for common man. Now 3G is not selling for the companies. Just think what did Reliance do to get the prices down for 2G, some kind of innovation. Now we need same kind of innovation for 3G to sell. Can’t the companies learn a lesson from the Artel-Reliance episode?

3G is worthless as the other end users are not able to use 3G.If my callers are not having 3G enabledphone and , i this why I should bear heavy costly plans without much usage as far as I am concerened.Other thing is 3G is not available in all towers. In kerala Docomo and Aircel are not available lacks signal quality in case of 2G in many areas. Then how they can offer better quality service. If i pay the cost, I should be able to use at its best. I think that cannot be possible in the present condition. Other thing to be happend is low cost 3G enabled phones are to be made available in market by the competitors.

To first poll, add “none of above” option for users ignoring/not using 3g…
Kanaga Deepan N December 18, 2011 at 1:32 am
Obviously 3g packs are too costly… Lack of competition is the reason… People are having good hope on 4G NOT for speed, but it may come cheap and bring competition on data…
Remember when Docomo were launching 3G sooo many people here are eager to experience 3G with the hope the 3G packs will be affordable (it is Docomo who reduced the 2G pack rates first and bring competition in 2G data)… But they were disappointed with the tariffs and more disappointed when all started charging same… Now what I fear is “If RIL’s 4G services may also NOT as cheap as people expect” people will be again very very disappointed… Then there is little hope for cheap internet in India…
But I wonder for how many months these 3G operators will be acting like “IT IS NOT PAINING TO ME”… The interest to their money paid for 3G waves is running too fast than their 3G data business… 4G is also coming too near… Let us wait and see…
Pratik December 18, 2011 at 12:59 am
And I do not plan to use hspa or evdo for downloading prod or alike.
Pratik December 18, 2011 at 12:58 am
Only reason is reasonable costing and removing fear of over charging.
If we compare evdo cost and hspa cost, evdo works out best.
I know evdo operators did not pay for spectrum.
But hspa operators can recover their license cost by increasing adoption.
I don’t see 3g standing any chance once op. Vijay starts commercial scale.
Give me 10 rs. Per GB.
I will happily pay for that.
riyan December 18, 2011 at 12:25 am
3g is ok with speed, but when 4g will be launched ,3g will disappear,4g will be 10 times times faster and much cheaper than existing 3g,download speed of 4g will be 3-6 mb/s average and peak speed will be 8mb/s,lets hope that 4g launches soon
kankan December 18, 2011 at 12:15 am
Lack of 3G spectrum and poor government policies makes this type of odd situation to customers and mobile broadband in India.
There are several 3G enable handsets are their in market but the tariff charged by the companies are very much affordable to companies CEOs and their managers only, not for common publics.
