Mumbai's largest Broadband service provider, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) today launched Carrier Ethernet Network With Capacity of 1.5Tbpcs in Mumbai.

MTNL and the Dept of Atomic Energy’s Electronic Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL) are entering a strategic partnership by creating a state-of-the art network using indigenous routers that were developed by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

MTNL Launches Carrier Ethernet Network

The Carrier Ethernet Switch Routers (CESR) were developed by IIT Bombay to answer the nations needs towards providing secure and low-cost communications platform that would be beyond what is offered as state of the art by foreign vendors and other providers.

Key feature of these CESR routers include providing 1-microsecond port to port latency that is perhaps the fastest in the business. Another attractive feature is the energy consumption of the CESRs consuming a small 70Watts for a 96Gbps cross-connect fabric.

MTNL’s carrier Ethernet network has 8-nodes each deploying ECIL’s EC-Router (ECR) equipment. The created network would have total capacity of 768Gbps in this phase of today’s launch and would lead to a final installed capacity of 1.5Tbps by this Diwali.

Through this network, MTNL will launch carrier-class Ethernet services to meet its customer’s bandwidth needs. Such services would include layer-2VPNs, ELINE and ELAN services, enterprise connectivity for large enterprises, enterprise clouds, connectivity for small-and-medium enterprises, mobile backhaul services for 4G and beyond, as well as alien-wavelength services.

MTNL will be able to augment its MPLS network with a much faster network that would for example facilitate <1millisecond connectivity from any place in the city to any other place in the city. This would allow financial and key customers to better virtualize their infrastructure. The ECIL CESRs in MTNL network will create a new network infrastructure that would serve as first indigenized effort in the telecom domain.

Given the recently expressed concerns about network security, the CESR based network will infuse new confidence given its complete reliance on indigenous technology. From a business standpoint, this network results in severe CAPEX and OPEX savings for service providers like MTNL.

The technology is a first packet-oriented approach making a big improvement over legacy technologies like SDH. A key aspect of CESRs is the reach of the equipment 1000Km communication at 10Gbps per line facilitating communication in both access and core of the network. A new benefit of the CESR network for MTNL is that it would be the first of its kind network conforming to the software defined network philosophy.

This would help MTNL customize services based on individual customer needs. This will also boost bandwidth demand and broadband infrastructure in the city of Mumbai.

The network was today inaugurated by the Principle Scientific Advisor (PSA) to the Government of India, Dr. R. Chidambaram (also former Chairman, DAE). The event was co-hosted by Chairman and Managing Director, MTNL A. K. Garg and Chairman and Managing Director, ECIL, P. Sudhakar.
