Mobile Operators Sets 100 SMS Limit As Per TRAI Regulation

Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communication (Reliance GSM and CDMA) have already implemented Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference (Sixth Amendment) Regulations, 2011 to stop the menace of telemarketing SMSes and sets a cap at 100 SMSs per day per users.

After the TRAI’s announcement on 100 SMS a day limit, GSM Operator’s body Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has asked TRAI to reconsider its recommendation regarding the 100 SMS/Day limit, claiming that such a regulation may pose a potential challenge to the “Fundamental Rights” of an ordinary subscriber. But Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has decided to stick to its decision to cap short messaging system (SMS) to 100 per day per SIM for all subscribers, so Free SMS in any form will be limited to 100 SMS per day and no more.

India’s largest Mobile Service operators Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communication are the first mover who have implemented the new SMS rule. They have also send notification SMS to their subscribers in various telecom circles about the the new TRAI’s rule which sets a cap at 100 SMSs per day.

Bharti Airtel in its routine prior notification SMS to its subscribers cites “As per TRAI Regulation Your Current SMS Pack benefits have been revised effective today. You can now send maximum 100 SMS/Day.

Please Note that the Limit of 100 SMS/day will not be applicable on “SMS Blackout Days” or festive occasions, when the subscriber is free to send as many messages he wants as normal or premium SMS rates as well as non SMS Pack users.

TelecomTalk readers Kaushik Roy and Sudhakar has shared the screen-shot of the official SMS what they received from Airtel.

What will happen after 100 SMS /Day ?

There has been lots of buzz going around regarding this one of our fellow TelecomTalk reader Amit Sharma who crossed his 100 SMS/Day Limit shared a screen-shot with us. However some of our sources at mobile operators end cited that 101 th SMS will be failed but still no operator has officially clarified the same.

Now We Ask You, should there be a Limit / Cap on the number of SMSes one can send? or It will hardly have any impact on communication between heavy SMS users when apps like BBM and Whatsapp, Nimbuzz etc that let people to chit chat without any regulator set limits in real-time for free do let us know via comments!

TRAI, Please remove the 100 SMS per day limit. We all are very comfortable to use SMS service within our friends to be in touch. This creates a lot of impact to the Public. Many people are suffering with this SMS limit. If someone needs to send an urgent msg after the limit and if he/she does not has the sufficient balance, it restricts them from conveying the msg to the other person. Also we are fine with the Pesky sms received on our mobile. We just delete it and if needed, we make use of it. Why is that the TRAI torture and make the Public suffer? We cannot afford to spend lot of money on calls and rather its better to use SMS. Please remove this limit of SMS and never ever think of bringing it back.

wtf… this just shows how must the provider wants money and are working with TRAI instead of thinking about the customer… they just wants us to apply new sims… and why the hell are there no limit on black days…simple thats when they charge full for sms… one question though… how much do you think TRAI got implimenting this???

i’m not satisfied… this is against our fundamental rights… they must have set the limits at-least upto 250-300 msgs, this is so gross!
i feel a pressure when i send every msg… plz reconsider this act!!

what the hell have you done? Just 100sms/day is not sufficient.. we want some changes in TRAI act. We want atleast 500sms/day.If you permit, the mobile operators only attain gain.. If we will send more sms, the sms booster pack will over as earlierly as possible.. then we put booster pack.. Its a gain only.. Then why you like this sms limitation.. Now-a-days we don’t like to use mobiles.. We must want changes……..

Well, I hope they should come out with something else for telemarketing, or it will lead to more SIM card sell to get more SMS, and it will be menace. :) Cheers with new (annoying)SMS rule!

HATS OFF TO TRAI FOR THIS AMENDMENT…

THIS WILL AT LEAST STOP THOSE PEOPLE WHO SEND PROMOTIONAL SMS FOR ADVERTISERS.

BUT THEY IMMEDIATELY NEED TO RESTRICT WEBSITES FROM SENDING SMS LIKE “TD-XXX”, “LM-ZZZ” & SO ON…

PLEASE TRAI LOOK INTO THIS ASPECT OF THE PROBLEM.

I haven’t crossed 100 msgs limit yet. But my frnd who crossed it yesterday said he was unable to send sms after sending 100. And look at the notification, it says you can send only 100 sms/day.. It didnt say 100 free sms/day.. So though my frnd was willing to pay for msgs he was unable to send sms. which is weird. Anybody else has this problem?? [operator: Airtel]

The fine print in TRAI’s order reads under point 8-c-kb on page 3 of the link below.

(kb) the Authority may by direction, from time to time, specify
the category of SMS which shall be excluded from the limit of one
hundred SMS per day per SIM:
Provided that before permitting a customer to send specified
category of SMS beyond the limit of one hundred SMS per day
per SIM, the Access Provider shall obtain an undertaking from Page 4 of 8
such customer that he shall not use such telephone number for
    sending any commercial communications:
Provided further that the Access Provider shall enter, in the list
maintained in the National Telemarketer Register, the telephone
number, name and address of the customer, category of exempted
SMS and date of permitting sending of SMS beyond limit of one
hundred SMS per day per SIM and the said list shall be updated
    every Monday.”

All the Operators want people to use the SMS Clients (Messaging Clients such as NIMBUZZ, Whatsapp etc)As this application are run on GPRS, So the operators are slowly bringing People from basic Mobile services (SMS and calls) to GPRS (Mobile VAS Services)as this would give them a lot of Revenue. Later they will Make this GPRS user Customers to 3G to Get fast speed to use this apps.

Now a days TRAI is Taking all the Decisions in the support of operators, might by they may have taken HUGE Bribe from ALL the Operators.

I send approx 300-400 sms per month (postpaid user) and the limit of 3000 per month is too much sufficient for a user like me.
But i will still oppose this stupid move by TRAI. P2P sms should never be limited.
Moreover, how can it allow unlimited sms on blackout days?
Sms blackout days itself is a fraud.

Yesterday I received an sms from Docomo informing the same. Now operators should reduce it’s SMS pack charges. Since we will get only 100 SMS a day. Now 10Rs/month for 100 SMS /day should be offered by every operator. Why pay more for reduced benefits.
