Micromax Canvas 4 vs Karbonn Titanium S9: Which one is a better sub Rs 20,000 device?

Micromax and Karbonn, both have almost similar kind of journey since their respective inception in the homeland. Both have gained significant success in the Indian smartphone market and are considered as neck to neck competitors. Hence, the competition between the recently launched Micromax Canvas 4 and Karbonn S9 is going to be very interesting. We are plotting here the comparative analysis of the two smartphones.

Micromax Canvas 4 specifications

· 13 MP Primary Camera with Sony sensor
· GPRS, EDGE, 3G and Wi-Fi support enabled
· Android v4.2.1 (Jelly Bean) OS
· Dual SIM (GSM + GSM) with dual standby
· Expandable Storage Capacity of 32 GB
· 1.2 GHz Quad Core Cortex-A7 Processor

micromax canvas 4· Full HD Recording

Micromax Canvas 4 comes with anodized aluminum body which is not just robust but also looks very smart. The keys are made of aluminum and it feels quite premium and offers better feedback. It comes in Grey and White color. The device is priced at Rs 17,399 and with its amazing camera capability, screens size and battery power, it is set to look beyond its league.

While its 5 MP secondary camera works fantastic during Skype chat sessions, its primary camera can give beautiful panoramic views, if moved smoothly across the area. Its price economy is a factor that you can not ignore. This was the reason because of which the device got huge response during the pre-sale.

Karbonn S9 specifications

· Dual SIM Support
· 1 GB RAM, 16 GB internal memory with slot for extension up to 32 GB

karbon-s9· 3G, Wi-Fi, GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth and USB

This is the fourth launch under Karbonn’s mid-ranged smartphone under Titanium series which has done decently for the brand. Many have alleged that there is not much difference between Canvas 3 and 4. However, it is for the first time that Karbonn has come up with HD IPS screen for its smartphones and the quality of display looks much better than its predecessors.

The market price for the phone is Rs 19,990. To make the deal more interesting, the company is offering a free flip cover along with the purchase of this smartphone. On the specification front, it scores well over Canvas 4. Its battery life and bigger screen gives it an upper edge in the competition. Both devices use similar versions of Android, hence score the same on this front.

Our take: On the looks front, Micromax Canvas 4 looks better with its metallic finish and sharp edges as compared to the plastic body finish by Karbonn. Both the devices use same operating system, processor and have identical camera specifications. However, Karbonn S9 can support your gaming and multimedia needs better with its larger internal memory, HD IPS based screen and a longer battery life. On the other hand, despite using the same camera specifications, Canvas A4 brings out slightly better picture quality and very it is going to get Android 4.3 update in the coming months. With this update, the experience will improve many notches. To sum it up, if you can afford to pay just a bit of extra amount, you should simply go with Karbonn S9.

    @Sudhakar
ya your opinion was true 2 yrs ago. but now mmx, karbonn, lava ,xolo peoples are launched phones with very good build quality. top notch touch response and premium hw/sw combination and very reasonable price. these companies are improved a lot. even build quality of some mnc brands are very cheap and overpriced….it is also pointing out that after sales suport of mmx, karbonn ,lava are somewhat satisfactry nw a days…why are you comparing
mmx and karbonn with gfive ?? all Indian ppls are not rich as buying a 40k mnc brand prdct…but mmx and karbonn like companies are only provide tat much high end features at very cheap price.

why people dont look for after sale service for these companies. Its like marrying a gorgoes girl until she catches a disease. Becoz if she catch there is no doctor to save.

Dnt expect a galaxy quality phone …13mp camera is just show..u will not get half of its quality…battery will b another issue.
& no proper R&D so dnt expect updates aswell.
Music quality will b another issue bcoz of low grade hardware quality.
Dnt expect a samsung quality phone if u can compromise all this then only buy this stuffa.

mmx just need to keep the hype lower.People expected toooo much after A116..reason for disappointment.

Both the phones do not have :

    > Quad band 3G
    > No USB on the go support (that is support for connecting pen drives to the mobile using OTG cable)
    > No gorilla glass 2 display
    > No Super AMOLED display
    > No 64 GB memory card support
(> Titanium does not have corning gorilla glass display)

Better put some more money** and get Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300 (Rs.26000 to Rs.29000 in ebay.in under ‘buy it now’ and ‘manufacturer warranty’ option*) or Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100 (Rs.28449 onwards in ebay*).

    * means – The price is the real price of the handset and no need to exchange our old handset to buy the Samsung Galaxy S3 or Note 2 N7100. Really.

    ** means – Rather than wasting Rs.20000

otg is supported in both the devices…even lava iris 504q @12k support otg….am not sure about the quad band ….but we can use in anywhere in India…..why are you say wasting of 20k….??? I dnt understnd…at nearly ths money v get a great devices with good hardware and software combination..i think the price is very reasonable..plz keep this in mind that mmx and karbonn doesnt get parts for free…dont under estimate the quality of indian brands…

      • S.Sudhakar August 26, 2013 6:59 am

These third class companies (micromax, karbonn, g-five etc) cannot match the quality, reliability and stability of the mobile phones from branded companies (Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, HTC etc).

s9 & canvas4 both are quad core but different chipset .s9 uses qualcomm snapdragon procesr and adreno 305 gpu…but canvas 4 uses mediatek procesr……so s9 is priced a litle bit more….

    • sheldon August 24, 2013 10:36 pm

karbonn s9 uses qualcomm A5 processor and adreno 203 gpu(which is far more slower then mediatek).
adreno 305 is found with kraits

  • raj August 24, 2013 7:53 pm

Dont by any micrmax product as their after sale service is very poor. They have provided false customer care number on website. Also, the numbers which are correct never been picked by anyone. You can check this.

    • vineet September 8, 2013 1:28 am

  • Tharun George August 24, 2013 7:41 pm

Sony Exmor RS BSI Image sensor is the best. Its used in iPhone, Galaxy and Xperia.
