IDEA Cellular, an Aditya Birla Group Company, launched its GSM services in Kolkata today. IDEA Cellular, a pan-India mobile operator has announced breakthrough tariff plans with big bang in Kolkata to allow its subscribers lowest local callings just at 30 paisa to any network
We don’t find any update on IdeaCellular.com nor there is any official announcement but the Idea’s SIM card is available for general public across the Kolkata.
This initiative by IDEA Cellular is set to usher in a new era of mobile phone billing, besides offering lowest call tariffs in Kolkata.
Idea Cellualr Prepaid Starter Kit costs Rs 49 comes with lifetime validity and zero talk time, To Enjoy the test of Idea’s GSM Mobile service, customers need to recharge with FRC-Ratecutter-51 which provide the all local call just at 30paisa and All STD calls will be chargeable at 60 paisa for 1st month while in the next 11 month the tariff will be 40 paisa per minute for all local calls to any network and all STD calls would be charged at 60 paisa per minute.All local and National SMS will be chargeable at 60 paisa per SMS.
Currently IDEA is present in 17 out of 22 telecom circles in the country. It has over 47 million GSM mobile subscribers under the brand “IDEA”. While the company has licenses and spectrum to operate in all 22 service areas of India at present.
It offers GSM mobile services in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar-Jharkhand, Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh-Chattisgarh, Maharashtra-Goa, Mumbai, Orissa,Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu-Chennai, UP-East and UP-West telecom circles.

From my usage I see that Idea has a high percentage of call-drops in Kolkata (any place). This is something that they have to work on. All the other operators (GSM +CDMA including Tata Docomo and Smart GSM) do not have such high volume of call-drops. However, their SMS channels and Customer Care lines are excellent. Good going so far Idea.

The main villain is may be the thickest wall of Writers Building made by British era.I guess it is more than 10 inches thick which obstructing the signal.The only solution is to build mobile towers on Writers roof top.

You have raised valid point. Some networks do have in-house network/ poor strength network problem because of less number of cell sites. Lot of peoples will switch to other appropriate operators after MNP considering these network strength problems.

!dea is providing a good network…its no doubt..Somehow i am having a horrible time at Writers’ Buildings(Kolkata)–my workplace..In my room,there not a single bar is available..However if I come out from my room,go upstairs–it becomes strong but with fluctuation..(It may be mentioned here that as per belief from different quarters regarding the use of jammer for blocking signal inside Writers’—the same is completely untrue)..Even BSNL(my first service provider from incoming chargeable days and the second worst service provider after R-GSM/Smart..!!!!!!)provides somehow good signals inside…New entrant TATA Docomo along with Vodafone/Airtel/Tata Indicom and Reliance CDMA is providing good in house service…Even after repeated complaints R-GSM and AIRCEL have failed to provide good service inside the building…with MNP in the near future,most of the cellphone users are going to shift their base(except Voda/Airtel)..!dea at this point may loose this golden opportunity of getting a slice of these customer alonwith Docomo..mind it there are around 6,000(whopping) employees inside Writers’ Buildings..the state administrative HQ…!dea,please give a serious look in this case..just because i am happy with !dea’s service but have to change the SIM card once I enter my Office…

Idea Cellular services in kolkata is ok but there are certain places on EM Bypass where there signal goes missing..When I roamed today in bengal circle just after crossing Bira till Habra(24 Parganas North) there is no coverage at all..This is really astonishing for a company like Idea who has launched their services in both circles after doing full network set up and all..They should make some Idea out of this atleast..Even searching manually in nokia handset there are signs of Airtel,Aircel,BSNL,VOdafone and Relinace smart only…No Idea and ofcourse Tata Docomo hasnt launched yet in Bengal circle…

I would check itself from kaikhali area tomorrow and post my comments then..There is no such problem at all cause BSNL has no problem whoever comes into the market be it a dominant new operator..They move their own way and are the trend setters! Other wise TTSL and Aircel wont have gone for tower sharing agreement with them for 15 and 10 yrs respectively..

NO Reliance have stopped good night plan.Reliance is not my company.Reliance at present condition doing well.Ya it’s it’s true they had worst network in Kolkata,even few weeks before.But they are quite OK.We are getting full signal in Metro station.But they have stopped 5paisa/sec at night.It’s very sad news for us.

The signal strength of Idea is very good in South Calcutta itself..In my area ie Tollygunge(Charu Market) the BTS catching is TOLLYGUNGE PHARI-1 is very strong with full coverage inside the bylanes too..Expect more kudos to come….Speciality is the launch of their operator number sim of 90880…Validty is showing of Jul 5th 2012 of late…..hope it would be incresed times ahead..The licence validity is surely 20 yrs ie 2029 for sure..

not bad..local calls @ 40p and std @ 60p for 1 year with FRC 51..but expecting some more attractive offers from both idea and tata docomo..i think in few days they will come up with some new rate cutters(STV)..but idea has not yet updated their website.their official launch is on 12th October.so expecting 2 STVs on local call and sms from idea..

Website will be updated on 12th October 2009.The day of their official launch date. Any how I HAVE GOT MY DESIRED SIM CARD & IT HAS BEEN ACTIVATED.OOH..WHAT A FIRST CLASS NUMBER 9088X-7X7X0 I GOT.AT LAST A LOCAL !DEA NUMBER & MY 2 YEARS WAITING HAS BEEN END NOW.

idea offers : all local 40 paise and all std 60 paise
recharge once with Rs 48 voucher
more or less same offer

Well Done Idea! The new tariff plans will offer more flexibility and freedom of calling to all categories of users – both low and high end – by offering lowest call rates in the market.

now it is a toss up between idea and tata , its looks though idea offers slightly better than tata. but tata can come with revised tariff plans

We Kolkatan’s were expecting something dramatic from Birla’s Idea Cellular in their home town. Reliance’s simple plan is much better in terms of tarrif plan.
