IDEA Cellular Gains Most From Mobile Number Portability

Looks like IDEA’s MNP campaign ‘No Idea; Get Idea’ has worked for Idea and is helping it to gain more and more subscribers.

As per the recent MNP data from TRAI Across India, 18.44 Mn Mobile subscribers have opted for MNP Service till 26th November, since the national launch.

Idea continues to top the chart on MNP Net Gain now Idea has highest port in share (29%) and lowest port out share (13%) among top three operators.

Vodafone ranks second among the list with a PO/PI (port in – port out) ratio of around 0.73% followed by Airtel with 0.96% (PO/PI)  with net subscriber gain of around 180,922 subscribers.

So what do you think is helping Idea to make it in the top list is it the ad campaign or  the best service ? Do share your views via comments.

The people of Kolkata were eagerly anticipating the arrival of Idea Cellular in Kolkata in Fall 2009. We had high expectations from Idea. However, it turned out that Idea had very poor network connectivity which continues even now. There was an instance wherein I called their customer care complaining about poor network and seeing that I had low balance that day, they asked me to recharge and then call back. I pointed out that I was a heavy user and having less balance that day did not have any remote relationship with facing poor connectivity, however, it fell in deaf ears. Their Customer Care was extremely rude then. I escalated it to their Nodal Officer but due to no timely response I switched over to Tata Docomo in Spring 2010. I have been a loyal customer of Docomo since then. Idea’s Nodal officer did revert but then I told him to forget about it since I had already switched to a different network and was contemplating to never again switch over to Idea in the future.

In view of this and the MNP gains that you’ve pointed above, I feel that Idea’s gain is a short term phenomenon. when the dust settles down, people might switch over to a different network finding Idea unfeasible.

I think now in ad sector tata docomo is 1st. But they not get too much customer by MNP . But they gain their new customer by those ad, so ad factor is not applicable for idea MNP . it is totaly depend on their quality. But now a days most young people go for docomo.

vodafone would have easily had negative MNP port outs if not for its big fraud of rejecting port outs under the mask of ‘contractual obligation’. even TRAI has found it guilty and been warned even by indian govt. here’s the proof – telecomtalk.info/trai-directs-vodafone-not-to-reject-mnp-requests-on-contractual-grounds/81150/

vodafone is nothing but a big high class fraud like kingfisher or satyam and even worse. its the nemesis of indian telecom industry and indian people. vodafone is a high class fraud and rcom is a chindi/petty fraud.

if vodafone is so good, why did you port out of it in first place? if idea is bad, then why are you still with it even after 4 months? after 3months/90days, one can easily port out once again! your statements are contradictory and suspicious!

ads are important but service is more important when one switches operators.Ads keep people aware of the latest developements happenning, also people get emotional with some ads.zoo zoos and irfan khan are the best bet for vodadfone and idea tries to send out a msg to the users through their “get idea” campaign.
all said and done,it has been a long time since vodafone’s “everybody’s welcome”ad was seen but still they maintained no2 position for quite a long time now and despite desperate efforts by anushka sharma as to how good reliance is and why should ppl change to reliance through MNP,it’s loosing customers due to their poorest services.

attaracting attention is alright but idea, vodafone couldn’t have been on top without better services for a long time.MNP is new in India but the operators and their services or atlest peoples’ perception about them hasn’t changed much…..

Idea is the best amoung the trios(Idea,Airtel and vodafone).Expecially their customer care executives,Airtel’s network is good.Vodafone is too expensive.compared with these trios Airtel’s customer care is the worst in Kerala.

Idea’s gain is just 1.7 million customers only within ten months time. It comes just one month’s gain in normal addition through new subs. For this gain through MNP how many crores Idea has spent! Recently, from the financial results of telecom companies it came to know that Idea is leading towards a loss this financial year mainly due to high expenditure incurred on advertisements.

Idea prepaid is too expensive many of my friend ported or opt for docomo but at the same time many people mostly related to business ported to idea postpaid due to better network and plans on postpaid clearly here idea which is largest operator idea is popular among business community but for collage going youth and who prefer prepaid tata docomo is the best choice

In Idea’s case it has more to do with the largest 3G coverage and faster rollout of 3G than the ad campaign. But let me clear some points to you here.

    1. Looking at the figures the main thing I have noticed is 2,376,549 customers ported-out of Idea which clearly suggests that their own customers were not happy at all with the Idea network. Those who ported-in from other network, had a thing in mind that Idea’s network is good but if you see user experience at different sites they aren’t happy too and calling decision to port-in to Idea as their mistakes. So, I wont call it a gain in any way.

    2. Vodafone has the most port-outs followed by Bharti Airtel which again clears that these two were also not able to satisfy a big subscriber base. Vodafone’s customer loss is nearly equal to their customer base in Haryana.

A total of 9,562,460 were not happy with these trio. And around 12,714,784 who ported-in will leave them at some point of time.

The matter of fact is not who is gaining or losing but the point is who has best network in place to avoid such port-outs.

Its a mix of both, idea understood the mentality of indian users, issues usually disappoint users and exactly targeted those aspects in its ad campaign, also they enhanced their quality of services to avoid churn and support new subscribers. Without ad campaign how can a user know about the offerings of the company? Its only people who visit telecom related sites are aware of QOS of operators and don go on campaigns. But still majority of population don use internet and among internet users majority of them dont even bother to visit or know about telecom offerings, so for such segment of people ad campaigns work well.

Very funny. I don’t think this has much to do with Advertising campaign! It has to do with very low tariff and descent call quality and low cost boosters (rate cutters)
