Hike Messenger Goes Aggressive By Offering Unlimited Free SMS To Users

Although WhatsApp, LINE and WeChat are considered as the major contenders in the IM (instant messaging) space, no one has won the war yet. There are still a number of IM apps that want to acquire a majority of the market share. Hike is a cross platform IM app co-developed by Bharti Airtel & SoftBank to stop users from flocking to other services like WhatsApp and WeChat.

Hike Unlimited Free SMS

Hike Unlimited Free SMS

Starting today, Hike is offering users with practically unlimited free SMS. Although there’s a catch. Instead of offering fixed amount of free monthly SMS quota, the more the user chats using Hike, the more free SMS credits they would get according to the new offer. This gamification strategy will provide more engaging Hike users. Initially published in 2012 for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry and Symbian S60, Hike has managed to acquire 15 million users recently. Some of the other features in Hike allow users to upload text and image status updates, sending images/videos/stickers and location as well as changing chat themes among others. There is also a privacy setting that allows users in hiding their ‘last seen’ time stamp.

i dont see any point in using hike!
they have plans to charge people! someday or the other believe me its airtels baby!
we all know what airtel can do.
and whatsapp is better as they say its chargeable after one year!
and the whole globe knows who owns whatsapp!

I just tested many messanger. Hike is from Indian company Bharti Softbank who are approved Google Play store developer. Hike is only one which offers,
        – Indian company. WhatsApp is American. You decide what to promote and AVOID.
        – Any file sharing: PDF, Excel, Word, Zip, RAR, MP3, APK (android installation file) etc.
        – Any file upto 100 MB
        – 128 Bit encryption on Wifi
        – Free SMS. The more you hike the more you get (no limits)
        – Flash sharing – Imagine the dancing GIFs and images. Not possible with any other messenger
        – Hidden chat mode. The chats or groups you select are hidden with pattern lock. You click on top icon and enter pattern to see them. Not in any messenger.
        – Rewards Rs. 20 for prepaid and postpaid users both for every friends referred.
        – Favorites feature. Only people added in Fav will see your status and pics. Not every people from Mess, Newspaper wala, Milkman etc who has your number. This is what happens in WhatsApp
        – Image quality. I always hated when all messengers trims down and compress the pics and videos and rename them as per they want. Hike gives you option to send originals. So, if I want my Dad to see my apartment pics in 10MP then it is 10MP (yes, you will need 3G or broadband then).
        – Much speedier than WahtsApp and Line. Checked it myself.
        – N number of stickers and Chat wallpapers which are 10 times better than Line stickers or whatsapp wallpapers.
        – WhatsApp has numerous security conflicts, hacking tools and chat hacks. It’s code is not secure. Check out Wikipedia.
        – About charges. Even WhatsApp charges you after 1 year of use. Rs. 50-60 per year. Check subscription in Settings. At least Hike charges will be half of it as per announcement.

So, what is there not to leave WhatsApp?

        • Rama - Chennai July 23, 2014 7:46 pm

TVs and movies were not enough. So you start your promotion on Telecom Talk also. Niice

  • Sudhakar April 16, 2014 7:46 am

Waste app. When I tried to register my mobile number (fresh installation) in Samsung N7100, the app closed by itself.

  • Saurabh April 15, 2014 8:36 pm

I have tried and tested hike and it is somewhat good but as WhatsApp is already in market from so long and also gained users over years, it is tough time for other IM providers. In past I have seen many IM apps dying but WhatsApp was lucky as it hit the market when mobile Internet was on a great surge. The first one I used was WEXT on my java phone back in 2006 but as none of my friends were using Internet on mobile I deleted it and the company which crated it dumped it because of not getting users. So the thing that has helped IM providers growing today is mass adoption which was missing before 2008-09 even in developed countries.

To attract users LINE, Hike are offering free talktime (this has become a trend globally to offer free talktime i.e recharge of few bucks freely) and many other e-commerce sites (purchase worth so and so, get recharge of so and so) or app developers are giving free talktime in order to tap users. But all users do is install it, take the free talktime and then delete it or never use it again like happened in past when users took SIM with freebies, used it and threw away. So they may get some growth but we call it inorganic growth that doesn’t help in long run.

So hike has to really pump up the innovation in order to have organic growth. Offering unlimited text which contains sent via hike line in it is not gonna work as Internet users rely more on IM then sending texts. For that they don’t need to have an app. In past change in normal messaging by introduction of SMS 2.0 didn’t worked also. So better if they keep text messaging where it is i.e traditional way and try to innovate more on Internetworking front which it is meant for.

iWhat is the use of SMS when ppl are already using IM’s?

  • Shubham Rai April 15, 2014 6:11 pm

Hike already offers free talktime on top of that unltd. free msgs. Nice sevice.

  • Rama April 15, 2014 5:04 pm

*I think it should be developed by Bharti and Soft Bank rather than developed by Bharti Airtel and Soft Bank.

*Its actually a stupid thing to do. Now in order to get these free SMS so people might start spamming other hike accounts which they know.Annoyed by the spam some people might actually leave hike.

*If SMS is a deal breaker then its better to use Gupshup which is actually a better option and has more users than hike.

    • ash April 15, 2014 7:02 pm

      1. I don’t know what gupshup is. Never heard of.

      2. Regarding sms, if user is registered on dnd then he will get only one sms and if he doesn’t respond to that msg then he won’t get further msgs.

      3. If user is on hike then he won’t recieve sms if he is not offline. So spamming.

      • Rama April 15, 2014 8:02 pm

*No bro you got me wrong.

*See in the post its written that in order to get more free SMS the user has to send more messages to other guys who have hike installed on their phones.

So supposing you own a android device and even I own a android device and both of us have hike installed then I can send u a message on hike and u can send me a message on hike too.

Now in order to get more free SMSes I would have to send more hike messages to users who have hike installed on their phones and are present on my contact list.

So supposing if you have hike installed and you’re also present on my contact list then if I run out of free SMSes then I would constantly keep sending you stupid messages on your hike messenger so that my free SMS balance can actually increase.

Annoyed by me constantly sending you messages on hike you might actually unistall the app and that’s what I meant.

*Well gupshup has been present since 2005 but because of a lack of marketing you can say it as the messenger has not been really popular but it supports almost all regional languages and has 65 million active users compared to 15 million present on hike.

    • Rudradeep Biswas April 15, 2014 7:22 pm

Free SMS – ha ha !!
I think Hike does not make any sense!
I installed Hike twice on my phone, and found almost none of my friends are active there, and less than 2% are actually used it once.
While you are on smartphone, it does not make sense that you are still sending text!

      • Sujith April 15, 2014 9:13 pm

You can send message to a non Hike user through Hike thats the benefit of this free sms.
ZAlso urgent sms can be send eventhough user is offline.
