PM to launch Digital India on 1st July 2015, BSNL to commission NGN Exchanges, Phase VII 2G/3G expansion

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Digital India Programme on 1st July 2015 at Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi. Leaders from 400 corporate houses including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella,  Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani and Wipro Chairman Azim Premji will be attending the function.

Prime Minister will present the roadmap for digital India and will launch the logo for the programme. Various schemes like Digital Locker, e-education and e-health will be launched at the event. The digital locker facility would enable citizens to store documents such as PAN card, passport, Aadhar and degree certificates online securely. Whereas e-health would help citizens to schedule appointments online for OPDs as well as diagnostic tests across five government hospitals including All India Institute of Medical Sciences, National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences.

Through Digital India Programme, Government of India wants to transform India into a digitally empowered society and has pledged over Rs 1 lakhs core for various project under the programme. As part of the programme, the week commencing July 1st will be observed as Digital India week. BSNL will be organizing Melas, presentations, press conference, Exhibition in relation to Digital India week. BSNL will also commission its NGN Exchanges, Phase VII expansion of 2G/3G BTSs and WiFi Hotspots across all circles.

One of the main objective of Digital India is to create a robust broadband infrastructure across the country to support e-governance. To accomplished this National Optical Fiber Network (NOFN) which aims to connect 250,000 Gram Panchayats by 2016 was brought under Digital India. The government is expected to provide retail broadband services at minimum speed of 2 Mbps for Rs 150 per month in economically backward states and at Rs 250 per month in the more economically advanced states. Plans with speed up to 20 Mbps will be available for all households and institutions on demand.
