bsnl100mbps-speedBSNL started WiMax service long before 4G came to India. But could not find any market for the service as it was costly and speed was just 2Mbps. Finally, BSNL surrendered BWA spectrum which was used for WiMax service in six circles but continued service in other circles.

As a relief to subscribers who have invested in costly WiMax devices, BSNL is now offering Rs 500 buyback for working WiMax CPE from existing customers. The offer is applicable to all circles of BSNL and any BSNL WiMax users can surrender the working WiMax CPE for buyback offer. WiMax CPE was sold at a price of Rs 1500 for USB Dongle/Indoor CPE/Outdoor CPE.

BSNL plan to exit WiMax and move to LTE?

Last year BSNL CMD Anupam Shrivastava speaking to a media said its plans to launch 4G LTE service by March 2015. This was right after BSNL surrenders BWA spectrum in 6 circles. BSNL intend to remain BWA spectrum 14 circles for the LTE service. This buyback offer is also inlined with its plans to exit WiMax and move towards much superior 4G LTE.

It's good to see PSU operators like BSNL is taking such a good initiative. Do let us know by comments your view on this buyback offer by BSNL.
