From our readers’ response we find that many are using BSNL EVDO as the cheapest wireless broadband with true unlimited plans.
But even if it is cheapest wireless broadband service, many people are not using BSNL EVDO, rather opt for 3G or EVDO services from private operators.
EVDO Rev A, as mostly deployed in India by Reliance, Tata, MTS and BSNL is a CDMA technology and capable of offering upto 3.1 Mbps downlink and upto 1.8Mbps uplink.
We are conducting a poll to get to know the reasons behind people’s negative reaction to BSNL EVDO.
Reasons you are not using BSNL EVDO? [maximum 2 options can be selected]

Bsnl Evdo is quite good,in terms of data usage(download only).
when you get good signal
(tower shown in application need not to be full)
with good quality you get really good download speeds.MY father works in bsnl so i have quite information about all these..
Still bsnl could do improve it signal strength by shaking hands with Qualcomm for upgradation of their BTS towers(evdo towers) then really bsnl can improve in the market segment.already its income and net profit has gone down from last years…it nees to take new steps but first need to improve their service quality rather than bringing out offers.

BSNL EVDO is working on CDMA technology. CDMA Coverage range is much better than GSM. Normally in open space its cover about 8 KMs. In city area coverage is best upto 1Km distant from BTS. after that coverage reduces about 20% per KM.@Nikhil

Someone who is using BSNL EVDO, Please tell me how EVDO signal or speed vary with distance from tower or what should be the distance to get Good/better/Best speed for BSNL EVDO. I want to buy connection but tower distance is 1.5 km from my home and BSNL personals told me that i may got poor signal strength. Can anyone clarify?

according to me it is best in its class but no network coverage…I am still using it hoping one day it will be in its full mood.In my home town it works good.but in bangalore network coverage is very bad(Sidedahalli).
Reasons behind these problems BSNL Employees …..Old man old thinking….
SIVA SUBRAMANYA SWAMY August 2, 2012 at 5:53 pm
BSNL EVDO HAS NOT A WIDE PUBLICITY COMPARED TO PRIVATE OPERATORS , BSNL IS ALWAYS WITH WIRED LINE BROAD BAND AND TRYING TO INCREASE THE REVENUE FROM WIRELINE BROAD BAND AND HAVE DOUBT IF BSNL EVDO GIVES PUBLICITY THEN OLD CUSTOMERS USUNG WIRELINE BROA BAND MAY DISCONNECT THE ALRESDY SET UP WIRELINE BROAD BAND , I THINK THATS THE REASON BSNL NOT GIVING MORE PUBLICITY FOR EVDO .
Dhansing Girase August 2, 2012 at 2:48 pm
@Tushar Gaikwad Thank U so Much TUSHAR,Like U customer r the only real property of BSNL!

when compared to other operators bsnl evdo coverage was low. we didn’t have evdo coverage even in vizianagaram town the other operators have the coverage. the bsnl always aims at land line only. it will not have any grip on wireless technologies and poor in marketing.

Hello friends. I have taken a new EVDO connection today in pune maharashtra. I paid 1199 for the modem. They gave me micromax 300C unlocked modem and also a CDMA sim card. I didnt get any free usage value with my card. I had to recharge with 800 and got a balance of 800 as my initial balance was -750 cause i had opted for 750 monthly rental scheme. I am using it in pashan sus road in pune. Getting 3 bars of total 4 bars. Speed is not constant at all. Speed varies from 1.2 Mbps to 100kbps. The people who works in bsnl does have very little knowledge about EVDO. They are not sure about anything. Those people are very lazy also. I had to wait for an hour in bsnl office as the person who was supposed to issue the modem and the card was out for tea break. She came back after half an hour. They are least bothered about their work.

I dont think so and I dont know why this kind of negative Polls are conducted?I am Using this BSNL EVDO service this is best one in terms of speed as well cost and coverage.Nobody can give you such cheap rates only by BSNL.This is true Swadeshi Company
rentala ramachandra July 31, 2012 at 1:33 pm
sir, initially the validity is 30days from activation is given. Top only to the extent to get the value of Rs.351 is required and you can surf unlimited for 30days since activation date. Extension of validity with Rs.20 is required only after 30days and will be exatended upto 180days.After 30 days again for unlimited surfing you should have a minimum balance of Rs.750 so on topup with sufficient amount the Rs.750 will be automatically deducted from available balance and like this occurs for every 30 days. You can enjoy unlimited surfing as long as validiy is there and every 30 days an amount of Rs.750 will be automatically deducted from your account.

I am using BSNL EVDO Service since last 8 months and fully satisfied with its download speed. The only problem is with upload direction,as it takes a lot longer to upload images and other data.I think that is because of low Bandwidth provided in upload direction(only 1.8 Mbps)and so EVDO technology itself is responsible for poor upload speed!!!
ARJUN CHANDRASHEKAR July 31, 2012 at 12:44 pm
Useless BSNL always having some problems in it’s network. BSNL EVDO Coverage is Very Very bad and Henceforth I Won’t Use BSNL EVDO
Treedy July 31, 2012 at 10:23 am
certain drawbacks with EVDO service of BSNL:
1. small coverage of EVDO network. due to which the signal is not penetrate and result to be poor coverage.
2. speed is nearly maintained about 500-600kbps and for downloading time is is nearly 50-100kbps.
3. dongle supplied is not up to the mark in quality.
4. roaming facility is not as required.
5. last but not least, fault redress is not good from operator side
R CHOGLE July 31, 2012 at 12:19 am
+1. APART FROM PATHETIC SPEEDS OF AVERAGE 500-600Kbps ONLY DURING THE DAY IN PUNE & WHOLE OF MAHARASHTRA, ONE IS NOT ABLE TO USE IT OR ROAM IN MUMBAI. THAT IS WHY I DUMPED BSNL EVDO!
I DON’T KNOW WHY MTNL MUMBAI IS NOT HAVING EVDO IN SPITE OF PROVIDING CDMA SERVICES. EVEN IF MTNL MUMBAI HAS LIMITED MOBILITY LICENSE FOR CDMA, THAT DOESN’T STOP THEM FROM PROVIDING EVDO IN MUBAI ONLY (WITHOUT NATIONAL ROAMING ON BSNL NETWORK)! DOES ANY EXPERT HAS ANSWER FOR THIS?
Chinmoy July 30, 2012 at 11:34 pm
I used Evdo for less than 1 month . The reason why I discontinued was
1. Poor Signal ( EVDO BTS was far from my home ) both in Nagpur in MH and Kalyani in WB
2. Customer Care / Information / Info on CDMA Service on BSNL site was very less . Even I could not find how to check balance in CDMA service .
Still I would rate BSNL EVDO best and suggest everyone to go for it only if you are nearby EVDO BTS .

BSNL EVDO is very fast. I use it from last ten months. No issue till today and the download speed 160 KB/s. I use postpaid unlimited. BSNL staff are not good but connection very good like BSNL Broadband, GSM 3G, CDMA EVDO etc.
Debopratim Roy July 30, 2012 at 10:02 pm
I am currently using BSNL broadband combo plan 750/ month and have thought of purchasing EVDO or 3G data card that too from BSNL as I have no faith in private operators who are always long on talking and dishonest relating to billing matters.
anup July 30, 2012 at 9:55 pm
You want to say if I bought a new evdo card then I have to recharge only RS.351+20 for validity.. and what about talk value?? So in next month I have to recharge for 750RS.????
rentalaramachandra July 30, 2012 at 9:31 pm
@chaitanya das
BSNL EVDO MRP IS RS.1199/- YOU CAN BUY AT ANY BSNL CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTRE. ON PURCHASE OF THE CARD YOU WILL BE DEBITED WITH RS.399 VALID FOR 30 DAYS. EXTENSION OF VALIDITY IS JUST RS.20/- FOR 180 DAYS. CHOOSE THE PLAN REQUIRED SAY EVDO PREPAID 750. YOU NEED TO TOPUP WITH SUITABLE VALUE TO GET THE VALUE AS 750-399=351. PRESENTLY FOR RS.200 AND ABOVE TOPUP YOU WILL GET FULL TALK VALUE. AFTER 30DAYS AGAIN NEED TO TOPUP TO GET THE MIN BALANCE TALK VALUE AS 750.

I am using BSNL EVDO from last four months. It is better than Tata Photon Plus. I am getting 60 to 220 KB/sec download speed. I am a prepaid unlimited user. When in roaming if EVDO signal is not there so I am getting 1X signal and download speed 10 KB/sec approx. I am happy with BSNL EVDO. True Unlimited download only for Rs.825/-. So its very chip.

It should be Asianet Data Line Plan.. Check their plans in their website !
I recommend 475 plan 4 Mbps Downloading speed 525 Kbps constant 3 GB day time & 2 am to 8 am Unlimited download !!
I used to download around 200 GB per month by using this plan when I was in Kerala!
Far far better than BSNL EVDO & only issue is that its Wired line !

HERE I READ ALL THE 50 COMMENTS 90% COMMENT SAYS THAT THEY ARE SATISFIED WITH BSNL EVDO AND CHEAPEST AND TRULY UNLIMITED WITH GOOD SPEED, BUT IF IT STILL NOT POPULAR THE REASON COMES IS LACK OF KNOWLEDGE ,LACK OF INTEREST AT BSNL CSC AND LESS ADVERTISMENT. IF ANY PRIVATE COMPANY COMES AT ANY CITY THEY ADVERTISE IT EVERY WHERE AND MAKE PEOPLE FOOL BY GIVING POOR BUT QUICK SERVICE AND PEOPLE TAKE IT AND FINALLY MAKE THEMSELF FOOL. ………………… SO IT HURTS WHEN SOMEONE IS GIVING BAD SERVICES AT HIGHER RATE AND LOOT INDIAN PEOPLE. …….I REQUEST TELECOM TALK TO CONVEY THIS SURVEY TO BSNL HIGHER AUTHORITIES IF POSSIBLE. BSNL BEST HAI HUM SAB KE LIYE,BECAUSE ITS FOR ALL OF US NOT FOR ANY INDIVIDUAL

In my opinion getting bsnl connection is a big problem and customer service is biggest problem.
Sanket July 30, 2012 at 10:48 am
I’m Sanket from Naraingarh town in Ambala district. We have BSNL telephone exchange here with 50000+ lines and their tower is also installed in exchange. I visited the CSC to know whether we have CDMA tower in our area or not? But none of their employee or engineers, JTE/JTO knew about it. But few days back I came to know that BSNL has both 1X and EV-DO in our town when one of my friend from Rajasthan came here. He had BSNL EV-DO modem and he told that he can use both services in our town. I was shocked to listen this. This shows that how illiterate BSNL CSC is as nobody knew that service is avialable. I again went to CSC to buy EV-DO dongle but as usual they said, when we don’t have service here, how can you expect us to provide dongle? So, I took my friend’s dongle to show them that we can use service here and it is available but the man said, maybe you are getting GSM signal. OMG how stupid someone can be. I didn’t argued with him as I knew that he don’t know anything about two different technologies. So I took prepaid dongle from Ambala Cantt main exchange and now using it in my town. Speed is always over 1.6Mbps and in morning it is between 2.4-2.7Mbps. Signal is too good as I my colony is on opposite side of BSNL exchange. Beside BSNL we also have Reliance EV-DO but it only gives 40-50 kilo bytes speed. Tata Indicom and MTS has 1X only and tata sucks with 5 kilo byte speed. MTS 1x Providing 18-19 constant.
But v don’t hav BSNL 3G. Only Idea 3G is available but no signal in my area as tower is far away.
I’m happy with BSNL EV-DO as it is truly unlimited. Youtube works without buffering but it eats up lot of data but who cares unlimited? BSNL best hai mere liye.
Pavan July 30, 2012 at 9:59 am

Praveen July 30, 2012 at 9:00 am
You make a call to photon+ guys., they will come to your door step, take required documents & money and give you connection.,
but for BSNL you have to make rounds around there offices.,
this is the main reason., and many people have data cards as backup or sponsered by their companies., so they don’t care (most) about download limits
Panakkaaran July 30, 2012 at 7:44 am
It is easy to buy a Reliance or Tata EVDO data card compared to BSNL.
The procedure with BSNL is cumbersome.
In case of trouble, customer care help of BSNL is not upto the mark.
Tharun George July 30, 2012 at 6:32 am

Its per month day usage. I was talking about BSNL COmbo 500 broaband plan. At night time 2am to 8am at 200kbos you can download upto 5GB per day.
Sajjad July 30, 2012 at 2:17 am
once i used in hubli karnataka n hometown is vaniyambadi tn.
i stopped using with in three months. reason
1. poor signal in my area in hubli for which i managed with extension cable.
2. no evdo service only 1x is available in vaniyambadi.
3.even in Chennai my brother in law is using n his home is very near to central railway station, the signal lots of time down.
4.in railway route it has very little coverage as compared to other cdma providers like mts r others.
i tried to get wimax also but both in hubli n vaniyambadi bsnl people told not to get wimax ‘coz its failure it has no coverage or working even in major cities like Chennai also .
so after tried many data cards i stopped using all of them n waiting for bsnl or any operater to provide truly unlimited n best coverage in wierless technology.

sunny July 29, 2012 at 11:28 pm
u can not say that BSNL evdo is not popular, these some 35 comments and some 500 polls within few hours is the real proof, now i tell u that user of bsnl evdo are permanent not like other operator i have seen my many friends buying tata photon and other at rs 1100 and using that for 1 or 2 months and then come back to bsnl evdo. the main problem is no advertisment and not easily availble u have to go to bsnl csc and todays people dont have the time and patience, they need everything very fast . when people go to any shop and ask for any dongle and get it quickly they never see and never understand the FUP DOWNLOAD SPPED UPLOAD SPEED THEN AFTER FUP THEY CRY AND ASK FOR BSNL. so bsnl should advertise it and make available at every shop. but i must tell u that the people who understand the term fup and download speed they all are with bsnl

consumer reaction towards bsnl evdo is not negative, as far as i know there might be issues regarding discrete presence of evdo bts or availability of datacard but wherever bsnl evdo is present no. of subscribers is pretty fine.Well it is true marketing has been sub standard, and bsnl staff doesn’t know much about the service but that is something where management needs to be blamed.
Nikhil July 29, 2012 at 10:10 pm
I enquire in BSNL office for EVDO service. But staff told me to check availability of EVDO signals in my area.(Farshi Stop).I met officials to know coverage but they also was not certain about coverage and they told me ‘not to go for BSNL EVDO. But i was eager to bye EVDO service, and i asked for application form for EVDO. But BSNL office staff told me that there are lots of problems with this service, even few customers came for returning the device because of coverage issue, BSNL satff told me that even in the centre of the city, EVDO users facing coverage problems. BSNL website showing three EVDO towers in Amravati.Overall feedback lost my confidence on BSNL EVDO service. Now i’m using MTS EVDO.
Reyas Mohammed July 29, 2012 at 8:16 pm
I am using BSNL EVDO from 2009 September, I found it is the best mobile service for truly unlimited plans than 3G. In Alleppey, the speed is best (max speed of 250-270KBps, and average of 100-125KBps). I am working in Coimbatore, and there I was facing issues with speed, but it was ok for browsing and chatting. I am using the old plan with old modem, which is 2.5 Mbps. But for me it is still the best. My needs are satisfied with this.
mohan darji July 29, 2012 at 6:21 pm

60-70kbps unlimited for Rs 750 + Tax is a great loss. Better to use night unlimited for Rs 500 + Tax. You could download at 200kbps from 2am to 8am + 1.5GB day use.
Also reliance provides 20GB 2G for Rs 248 for 3 months which is almost like unlimited. Download speeds are steady at 29-30kbps.

Tharun George July 29, 2012 at 4:51 pm
Exactly same in kerala. I was after EVDO from 2007 onward when it was launched. BSNL never put a single advertisement regarding EVDO. When I approach them they say it is under testing or 3G is better. They push for adoption of 3G.
For the last 2 years BSNL has not added a new site in my city. Looks to me like EVDO is dead. 2 years ago I had emailed an BSNL kerala officer to add EVDO at my location. The following is his reply.
“The 3.1 mbps speed is not for a single user. it is the speed of one sector(120 degree). If there is only one customer u will get this speed, ie 3.1 mbpa is shared by all users in that sector. It this theory os applied in WiMAX it is 8 mbps in each sector. however we r restricting to 2 mbps per user. So WimAX is much superior to EVDO(EVDO is 3G, WiMAX is 4G)”
Now for WiMax it is also dead. It was launched with much heap. At least BSNL put some ads for WiMax and sold some. But for EVDO they just killed it.
Some of my friends who used EVDO told speeds below 1 mbps only at most time. Reliance and Tata has better speeds.

2.No awareness in people at CSC.
3.Only few staffs can explain clearly, but they are overloaded with work.
4.No reliablity in speed/Connectivity
5.Same is the case for Wi-Max connections
6.Installer will not give whom to contact in case of trouble.

When I tried to buy an EVDO card from BSNL , they said ,they have stopped selling the EVDO datacards and only 3G datacards are available. This is as recently as may 2012 in visakhapatnam. So naturally they don’t want to get popular in that area anymore !

@Tushar Gaikwad
i stay in chennai & have same problem.BSNL not ready to give demo for EVDO.Private operators tata, mts, reliance are ready to give demo & activation in 2hrs.This shows BSNL inability. How they are expecting customer will take device without demo? If the situation is like this in state capital itself I can understand how the condition is in rural areas.BSNL WAKEUP!!

Most of the BSNL staff does not know anything. Even though BSNL deployed latest equipment. But their staff does not know how to handle and use it. They are waste. . . .

Had used in 2008. While buying, customer care told, it is available in my area, so purchased at that time.
When I connect , GUI shows only 2 signal bars.
Thus download limit will come around 8-20kb per second. Most of the time internet will be connected, but signal bar will be nill. When I make a compalint they told, it working fine in there are… So do I need to stay in there area for good speed of EVDO… Worst people of BSNL.. Always giving false informataion. When asking something , they will answer in a rude way, as if we dont have any other option.. thumbs down for BSNL EVDO

180 Days validity extension is with Just Rs.20 only. If we choose EVDO 750 Plan only topup is required to update the minimum balance to Rs.750 and surf unlimited for 30days.

Main reason are BSNL’s staff itself even if a customer is interested the staff behave in such way that the customer never comes back. And second is their customer service.

I was prepaid BSNL EVDO Device user. But Now i am using Vodafone 3G.
But there is many problems with BSNL EVDO.
1.EVDO service is not available in all areas of India. It’s only available in posh area of Popular cities. It sucks to cdma 1x speed.first of all Bsnl needs to improve its Evdo(Rev A) service.Upload speed is very low.
2.It has no retailer or online recharge facility in my area.I had to go to BSNL office to make recharge.
3.Bsnl staff has no enough knowledge about evdo recharges, plans and facilities such
RUIM based Evdo dongle and many more.
4.In Evdo device we need to make recharge of 40 rs to extend its validity. Thus it becomes very costly. we need to make recharge of 825 rs for unlimited plan.
5.Evdo service is not present in Delhi and Mumbai. these are cities where one
has to go frequently and needs availability of internet most.
Points which is in favour of it.
1. In areas where service is present,Networks are strong.
2. downloading speed is good between 70KB/s to 240KB/s by IDM.
3. Device quality is good.
4. Voice Call can be made from it to any mobile or landline but voice clarity is not so good.

Bsnl staffs also dont know about EVDO service. I can get full coverage but speed is 10KB to 20KB.Service is very very poor. I raised lot of complaint but no use. Bsnl is old age home. all are dont know about their services and short temper peoples.

I am using BSNL EVDO for last 7-8 months. Plan 750 postpaid.
I stay in an area (Hadapsar, Pune) where BSNL cannot provide new land-line connection due to Municipal Corp. issues, so I had the option of going to other operators or wireless.
Checked with everyone, but no good unlimited plans. Reliance, MTS, Photon all have tragic FUP, which i really hate !!!
Went to BSNL to inquire about EVDO, but they did not provide me a demo, and said that the coverage in my area may not be good.
But, I went ahead and bought a connection for Rs. 1499 (with one month free usage), and the coverage at my home was good and I get download speeds upto 60-70 KB/s, which is fine.
I download continuously and have got myself an external booster antenna for rs.500.
My experience with BSNL EVDO has been good, as compared to BSNL 3g !
The BSNL CDMA customer care is very prompt and helpful, as compared with BSNL 2G/3G customer care.

Neither me, my parents or my relatives work for BSNL….. This is an unbiased review.

All offices of BSNL doesn’t deal with mobile/data card services, only some major/big offices do. I am not writing about any village, this is in a metropolitan city. So availability or approachability is a major issue due to which BSNL is loosing a lot of business. So, all local exchanges of BSNL must provide the services. Then, as other friends said, all the staff aren’t quite capable of helping the customer with proper information. BSNL’s online payment web portal isn’t equipped with full information about data packages; no provision of recharging with STVs. Local private dealer outlets rarely provide BSNL’s data card recharge facility, hardly some mobile talk time available. BSNL lacks a professional attitude an expert guidance to steer the organization’s services to a big success.

I think you are not a BSNL EVDO user.
Sumit Baran Majumdar July 29, 2012 at 8:27 am
I am using BSNL EVDO from February 2012. My EVDO plan is postpaid 750Unlimited. Download speed is 120KB/s to 315KB/s by Internet Download Manager and Upload speed is 25KB/s to 45KB/s. I like it and BSNL is the best.

I have tested BSNL EVDO in my place… Coverage is my only issue…
BSNL is the very first CDMA operator to bring EVDO to our town… But its EVDO coverage is available in ONLY 25% of locations… BSNL technical staffs are saying that, they have installed equipments in their own towers only and NOT in rented towers (like GSM 2G/3G), so this very much low coverage… WTF???? Who asked them NOT to start EVDO in rented towers and bring sh!tty coverage???
Further many BSNL staffs at that time of EVDO launch, don’t know that BSNL is offering CDMA services (apart from WLL), let alone public… BSNL should market their CDMA services aggressively…
If some private operators are milking in one segment of market, the main reason will be, the sleeping of KumbhaKarna BSNL in that segment… For example, CDMA operators are charging an arm and leg for their EVDO services, because EVDO coverage of BSNL-CDMA is not as good as their GSM services…

BSNL EVDO is not popular because bsnl staff themselves does not know details about it and following are the reasons for not being popular:
1. As BSNL staff themselves are not interested in providing connection and always tell customers to visit this office or that office for providing details.
2. If you go EVDO connection, BSNL office people suggest to go for 3G or broadband
3. It is always very difficult to get currency for BSNL EVDO Prepaid
4. BSNL people themselves are not aware about their products & tariffs
