QUESTION: For anyone who really knows:
I am from Sydney and will be in India for 3 weeks. I would like to get a PREPAID SIM card which will:
    * Cover both Tamil Nadu & Kerala (specifically, Chennai, Coimbatore, Palghat, Ooty)
    * will allow trouble free calls to be made/received (no drop outs, good reception etc)
    * ability to recharge without hassle (ie. easily accessible outlets in above cities)
    * cost is NOT the criteria but trouble free usage is the MOST important criteria
    * my starting point is Chennai

Comparison between new roaming incoming free plans :
Airtel – all outgoing calls in roaming and home – 1.5p/s
Vodafone – all outgoing calls in roaming and home – 90p/min even in smaller circles like Bihar/Orissa
Idea – all outgoing local calls in roaming and home – Re 1/min and STD Rs 1.50 per min
Reliance – all outgoing calls in roaming and home – 1.5p/s
BSNL – all outgoing on net calls in roaming and home – 80p/min and off-net Re 1/min
Uninor – all outgoing local calls in roaming and home – Re 1/min and STD Rs 1.50 per min

  • Dinesh Jayakrishnan July 7, 2013 9:57 am

I have a small doubt , will this free incoming pack will work on blank out days? or they will charge premium charges for both incoming calls and out going calls on those blank out days?

  • Vivek July 6, 2013 12:18 pm

    @Mr. Bafna
Pack @75 for postpaid users, on pro-rata charges or on fix monthly charges????? Please clear it.

    • DUANE July 6, 2013 1:18 pm

@VIVEK – both monthly packs (Rs 79 prepaid and Rs 75 postpaid) are one time charges, to avoid misuse by customers who will activate for 2-3 days, use roaming and then deactivate.

      • sent from Telecom Talk Balckberry app •

      • Vivek July 9, 2013 4:49 pm

@DUANE- still there is a confusion….i am using Turbo 199 per second plan. In this plan the call rates are 1p per second to any local & std along with 18000 free local+std seconds & 200 local+std sms. In roaming incoming 60p and all outgoing to local+std airtel 60p, all outgoing to other 80p.
If i opt Roaming pack@75, my all coming will b free, no doubt but……what will b my outgoing calls & sms charges???? 60p/80p or 1p???? airtel will give me freebies in roaming or not????? please clear it. Thanks

        • DUANE July 9, 2013 5:08 pm

@ VIVEK – its quite simple, please dont be confused ;-)
Rs 75 (POSTPAID) packs give you ONLY INCOMING FREE. There is NO CHANGE in the outgoing call charging (MIN or SEC) and in terms of amounts. So if you take 1699 SOLITAIRE PLAN (which gives 10,000 min free) the INCOMING will be free and outgoing will be PER MIN… similarly if you take TRAVEL MATE 499 (which gives 50,000 sec free) the INCOMING will be free and outgoing will be PER SEC.

In your case if you take Rs 75 INCOMING FREE PACK + TURBO 199 PACK- then you will STILL have INCOMING FREE + whatever outgoing rates you had previously (outgoing to local+std airtel 60p, all outgoing to other 80p). Hope this clarifies!

Aircel New One Nation, One Rate Plan(Kolkata circle):

  • Sathish, Gobichettipalayam. July 4, 2013 6:26 am

For free roaming, How to beat AVOID Group? There is a some level to minimize the new operator’s additional cost by forming a group like A-Vo-Id. For e.g in RoTN, Apart from A-Vo-Id group, there is a another group – Aircel-DOCOMO-Reliance. as we all know Aircel has strongest and largest 900Mhz network across TN. That is why Tata DoCoMo and Reliance GSM both has almost stopped to launch their new 1800Mhz GSM BTS in TN. Because These two networks has already using (sharing) Aircel’s strongest network across TN. Likewise these three has doing small level across india. If we compare these three (Aircel-DoCoMo-Reliance) with A-Vo-Id group. These three, new gsm operators having very less owned towers. These three operators (AIRCEL-DOCOMO-RELIANCE) should include BSNL GSM along with other kids – Uninor & Videocon in their group or use BSNL GSM (another strongest PAN india – more than 80,000 GSM 900Mhz network) to minimize its cost, then only these small operators can manage cartel A-Vo-Id group in India at the time free roaming. Otherwise these small operators will have to pay more.

  • Kingston July 3, 2013 8:14 pm

A person from kerala, working in Tamilnadu always wishes to keep kerala mobile number because if he keep kerala number he can get calls from their relations at 10 paise(same network) if he is in incoming free roaming pack.

Today 70% of people are there in the above category only . . . So this monthly free incoming pack should reduce the volume of STD calls because every one recharge roaming pack and enjoy calls at 10p.

So due to the above issue, after one or two years the AVOID group will launch one india one tariff and you can get home tariff in roaming and there is no word roaming in future.

    • S.Sudhakar July 4, 2013 6:45 am

You are right. Operators must launch ‘home tariff while roaming packs’ at reasonable rates which enables us to use home network STVs / boosters ** in national roaming (similar to Tamilnadu – Chennai and Kolkata – West Bengal).

** means – Lets assume that you have enabled local on net mobiles at Rs.0.10 per min ; local offnet mobiles at Rs.0.30 per min as one STV and all STD mobile calls at Rs.0.35 per min as another STV.
If your home network is circle 1 and if you are going roaming to circle 2, then all on net mobile calls within circle 2 must be charged at Rs.0.10 per min, all offnet mobile calls within circle 2 must be charged at Rs.0.30 per min ** and all calls outside circle 2 (including circle 1) must be charged at Rs.0.35 per min. Incoming calls from anywhere can be charged at Rs.0.30 per min. Similar case must apply for SMS packs also.

** If home network is not present in roaming location (like Videocon and Uninor which are not present PAN India as for now), then all mobile calls within the roaming location can be charged Rs.0.30 per min and all calls outside the roaming location can remain at Rs.0.35 per min.

Some operators in Mumbai and Maharashtra are charging more (eventhough incoming is free) if subscribers move to either circles. Shocking !!!. Is it true?.

  • Kingston July 3, 2013 8:05 pm

In facebook, we can easily like one person comment and reply to that comment.
And we can submit a comment just by press Enter key but the page won’t load fully just it will update the comment section. Its easy to post comment.

Why others including Telecomtalk can’t give that kind of features or they are not aware of this kind of facebook feature?

  • Kaushik Roy July 2, 2013 11:13 am

Best is airtel daily pack of Rs 5.It is useful for persons who roam 3-4 days in a month.
Now what will MTS and Telenor offer in roaming incoming ? They have presence in less than 50% Pan India circles

    • DUANE July 3, 2013 11:55 am

      Kaushik-da how are you!!
Its quite simple: AIRTEL, IDEA and VODA are now showing their DOMINATION in the market, as no one can offer PAN-INDIA roaming except them !! So operators like TATA DOCOMO, AIRCEL, MTS and UNINOR will not be able to offer “Free” incoming OR “Home Tariffs on Roaming” with their skimpy coverage + limited network coverage areas. So, in short, if you (as a Customer) want FREE ROAMING – switch to A-VO-ID (Airtel – VOdafone – IDea) !!

      >> Now what will MTS and Telenor offer in roaming incoming ? They have presence in less than 50% Pan India circles

      • Kaushik Roy July 3, 2013 12:30 pm

I am fine duane bhai and hope that u r also fine
Its true, quality coverage full free incoming roaming can be given only by AVOID
RGSM also provide the same with limited coverage,
RCDMA except Assam and NE with quality coverage
BSNL should tie up with MTNL for providing the same
Aircel/Docomo/Uninor/MTS/Loop/Videocon -all have to look for partner networks

      • Souradip July 3, 2013 5:25 pm

what is meant by RTP-FR @sanjay bafna..

            • DUANE July 17, 2013 1:10 pm

RTP-FR stands for Roaming Tariff Plan – Free Roaming

  • aks July 2, 2013 10:44 am

somebody pls confirm. Roaming Free on Home network or any network????

    • SS July 2, 2013 12:32 pm

Of course, it would not be valid on partner network.

    • DUANE July 2, 2013 2:28 pm

AKS – Roaming cannot be free on “Home” Network as Roaming does not happen when in the home network. Instead Roaming can happen on “Own” Network or “Partner” network. For example TATA DOCOMO AP customers can roam in KA on “Own” (Tata Docomo) or “Partner” (Aircel) networks.

  • Kaushik Roy July 1, 2013 11:33 pm

BSNL already have 199 plan but outgoing in roaming is costly and not on per second pulse
they have to reduce outgoing rates in roaming to match airtel

  • S.SUDHAKAR July 1, 2013 8:53 pm

    Waste plans.

    >> ALERT :
Existing booster pack may get cancelled.<<

No use of making incoming free. Make home network's plan / booster (voice, SMS and data) to work in national roaming also (like Chennai – Tamilnadu and Kolkata – West Bengal).

    • Imran July 4, 2013 11:30 pm

Its cities-state roaming, but not state-state, ok..

  • Saurabh July 1, 2013 8:33 pm

I don’t know about other circles but here in Haryana Airtel is offering Roam-Free Plan @Rs. 177 with a validity of 180 days since late February this year and Idea providing it at Rs. 93 for 90 days since March. BSNL has Rs. 199 Roam-Free plan applicale all over (I think) and it costs Rs. 177 via SMS. Videocon is not charging in roaming but it’s beneficial for Haryana customers only in who’re frequent roamess Punjab as Videocon don’t have services in other neighbouring states.

Reliance GSM Roam-Free is available AT Rs. 179 for 180 days. Tata, Vodafone not providing any.

reliance gsm roam free??? is this plan applicable in tamilnadu/kerala circles???

  • Jay July 1, 2013 7:41 pm

I still feel Aircel “One Nation” plan is better, but as far as coverage is considered, the worth of the recharge depends on the Circle you visit.

    • Keshav Jha July 2, 2013 10:32 am

Aircel has stopped/modified its One Nation plan in many circles and made it useless.

      • DUANE July 3, 2013 11:56 am

        Which circles Keshav ?

    • Ameer July 4, 2013 11:29 pm

Aircel Roaming pack RC25 for AP is working fine me. I can switch to any state and o/g will be 1p/s..

  • Dinesh Jayakrishnan July 1, 2013 5:26 pm

great offer from Airtel ., i recharged with one month plan rs 79 .. and it worked, thank u Airtel for giving us this kind of plan but my suggestion is 79 rs for a month is costly

    • DUANE July 1, 2013 6:43 pm

Rs 79 is cheap – with roaming u can speak for UNLIMITED and save Re 1 min

      • Dinesh Jayakrishnan July 1, 2013 7:43 pm

79 isn’t costly but 79*12 =948 do you think this is cheap ? i am saying to minimize the tariff tats it..

        • sourabh July 1, 2013 8:01 pm

Are u going roam for 12 month

          • shiva July 1, 2013 8:47 pm

good plans 79 is good plan

          • DUANE July 2, 2013 1:18 am

Yes I use a WB sim in AP – have been on roaming EVERY DAY since last 4 years !!

            • adq July 2, 2013 12:21 pm

Buy an AP sim. BTW 948 rupees is not a lot of money for a year.

              • DUANE July 2, 2013 2:24 pm

I use a fancy number of WB, which cannot (as of now) be ported into AP.

          • Dinesh Jayakrishnan July 4, 2013 12:15 am

i am from kerala and working in tamilnadu. yes i am roaming for 12 months.. since 4 years.

  • Gavin Mathos July 1, 2013 4:58 pm

    Great Offer from Airtel!!!

But i don’t understand why do Telecom Operators do not give Pan India Free Roaming?

    • DUANE July 1, 2013 6:44 pm

@ GAVIN – wait this is only the start !!
Idea. Voda are next to offer FREE ROAMING – watch TT on Wed

  • teletalk July 1, 2013 4:06 pm

great offer from airtel for travelers and specially day based plan is the best for which is go roaming for few days like 1 , 2 or more …….claps …….

  • SS July 1, 2013 3:55 pm

So, roam free India is now a dream. But still, that doesnt matter me because that’s simply not going to benifit me. I guess it would cause loss to me instead.

Still, the same useless packs from airtel as expected.

    • DUANE July 3, 2013 11:58 am

-1 these are not “useless” packs : its very affordable @ Rs 5 per day.
In fact for one who receives 120+ min (incoming) per day ON ROAMING – its very affordable!!

  • SOMNATH July 1, 2013 2:42 pm

iss pack me Roaming me sms pack kam karega???

    • DUANE July 1, 2013 6:45 pm

@ Somanth – FREE SMS on ROAMING (200 nos) in TRAVEL MATE 499

  • renjucool July 1, 2013 1:15 pm

Also BSNL having 199 RS Roam free plan for 6 months validity. Better than Airtel.

    • teletalk July 1, 2013 4:10 pm

if you going on roaming only for 3 day and you are recharge 199 rs is so costly but airtels day based plan is best compare to bsnl its free at only 15rs instead rs 199

      • Anindya July 1, 2013 6:15 pm

Yes u r absolutely right… @teletalk. but is there any roam free plan for tata docomo prepaid users?

        • DUANE July 1, 2013 6:46 pm

No. Tata Docomo postpaid has 299 plan (minimum) with roaming free.

    • almnisar July 1, 2013 4:16 pm

Bsnl thou offers incoming free its outgoing rates are Rs 1 and 1.50 per minutes not seconds based and applies only to bsnl states not in mtnl.

    • DUANE July 2, 2013 1:19 am

How can you compare BSNL NETWORKL to AIRTEL NETWORK ???
      Bullock Cart to BMW ;-)

  • renjucool July 1, 2013 1:12 pm

I’m using Vodafone 325 CUG plan for more than 5 months @ bangalore. 60000sec LOC+STD+ROAMING call free, 500 local+nat sms free. Better than Airtel.

    • Sunny July 1, 2013 1:38 pm

      Bhai Airtel is giving for Airtel248CUG 1000 mts LOC+STD+ROAMING & 200 local +std sms.

      • renjucool July 1, 2013 2:53 pm

Its not available in Bangalore..If so kindly post the executive number.

        • Sunny July 1, 2013 4:24 pm

Its a pan india CUG plan available for IBM employes, visit any airtel store

          • DUANE July 2, 2013 1:20 am

Join IBM to get the plan he informs on a PUBLIC FORUM !!

            • Sunny July 2, 2013 10:32 am

DUANE i mentioned IBM as renjucool was talking about Cognizant CUG plan, this post was ment for him not for u.

            • Sunny July 2, 2013 10:37 am

DUANE this post was meant for renjucool as he was talking about Cognizant CUG plan thats why i mentioned IBM to compare. This was just for information purpose only that airtel is already providing good plans to big corporates.

              • DUANE July 2, 2013 3:25 pm

OK Sunny I guess I caught the wrong end of the stick !!

    • spiderman July 1, 2013 1:58 pm

How could I get this plan ?? I could not find this plan when Vodafone people visited my company. Will CUG plans vary company to company ??

      • renjucool July 1, 2013 2:53 pm

May be it will vary. Its with Cognizant.

  • Sushant July 1, 2013 1:11 pm

nothing is good. BSNL already providing batter roaming plan with good network connectivity
198rs for 6 month roaming incoming calls free. airtel looting plan.. total waste

    • Kanaga Deepan N July 1, 2013 4:21 pm

The RECENTLY CHANGED roaming charges in 199 RoamFree plan is Rs1.00 for Incoming in MTNL circles like Mumbai & Delhi… Further roaming outgoing calls are Rs1.00 for Roaming Local onnet/offnet and Rs1.50 for STD onnet/offnet even when roaming in BSNL circles. AirTel’s 1.5p/sec is better than this…

Earlier BSNL also charged 1.5p/sec, but now it has stopped. I am using this 199-RoamFree plan in my BSNL number…

  • DUANE July 1, 2013 12:25 pm

Great Offer from AIRTEL – Best network + Incoming Free + 50000 Sec Roaming (Local +STD + Roaming)… have already changed into this plan from 2 July 2013 00:00 hrs !!

    • ABRU October 9, 2013 7:21 pm

I am in Gujarat and my home town is tamilnadu and i trying to Ec of 79 roaming plan but it showing not successful …how will i activate roaming plan….pls Reply me sir…

  • aks July 1, 2013 12:23 pm

Good initiative. Hope the price will come down soon. But a very good offer for people like me who roam per for about 3 to 5 days every month. And the important one its not going to affect my Current plan. Most of the networs roam free plan changes your base plan and current rate cutters.
