After BSNL, Idea Cellular Decides to Love Green Can we call this BSNL Impact ?

Follow Us

Just two days ago we reported how state run telecom operator BSNL is encouraging its Landline and Broadband customers to Go Green by switching to e-bills. It appears to us that Idea has taken a cue from BSNL's move and decided to promote e-bills in what they call "Idea Loves Green". We have learnt that Idea Cellular  has started reaching out to customers subscribed to paper bills encouraging them to switch to e-bills.

In what can be called exact footsteps of BSNL, Idea has provided the same mechanisms for customers to opt for e-bills (except portal based registration which would be an easy option; may be it takes time to setup :P) -

  1. Via SMS: Type ONLYEBILLEMAILID and send to 456
  2. Dial customer care at 12345* and place a request
  3. Register the email ID at your nearest My Idea outlet
  4. By sending an email request to ccare.pun@idea.adityabirla.com

What surprises us is the lack of incentives to customers. While Idea states customers would receive paperless bills for free, there is absolutely no doubt that Idea would make massive savings with this move.

So why not pass on some benefit to customers like BSNL - in terms of say free SMS or call units? Other than rewarding customers we appreciate Idea's move to encourage customers to receive e-bills.

Looks like the e-bill trend is fast catching up across sectors now. To give an example from the banking sector, ICICI switched all customers to email only for credit card statements from October 2013.

In the email notification which was sent well in advance, they had informed customers that unless specifically asked statements would be sent only by email. Again a last date was given to opt for physical statements. This method according to me would ensure that a large number of customers switch from paper to paperless mode at once when compared to opt-in for email bills like telecom companies.
