A brief overview of the iPhone 5S

Once in a year, Apple Inc. feels the urge to showcase its last one year’s R&D effort in the form of a new launch. Last year however, many criticized the company for not creating something really new as there were not many notable differences between the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. Hence, many waited this year for the company to announce the iPhone 5S. Now we have got the official word about it. Let’s look at its features and specifications to find out whether it is really something fresh or merely another satchel of features put together-

iPhone 5S

· 4.0-inch, 650 x 1136 pixels (326 ppi pixel density) display
· 16/32/64 GB internal memory variants (of course, don’t expect a card slot)
· Li-Po 1440 mAh battery to provide up to 10 hours of 3G talk time, up to 250h of standby, up to 40h of music playback
· 8MP, dual-LED flash primary camera along with 1.2MP front camera for self shots and video chats
· iOS 7 Operating System
· Apple A7 chipset
· iTouch fingerprint sensor, Accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass
· Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n dual-band, Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity options with 2/3/4G network
· 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm dimension with 112 g weight

The new iPhone comes in three different metallic finishes: Gold, Silver and Space Grey. Apple has also launched a brand new leather case for the iPhone 5S. As far as changes are concerned, you will see an immensely improved camera quality thanks to the features like true tone, a new burst mode and Slo-mo video. True tone is an amazing feature which gives very accurate color tones to your pictures. The new operating system is a big improvement too. On the machinery front, the new Apple A7 has a 64-bit architecture which can give about double the CPU and graphics performance of iPhone 5.

The new iPhone 5s has a touch sensor embedded into the Home button which is called Touch ID. This can be used instead of passcode for a better security. Moreover, it can identify multiple fingerprints.

The device will be available for sale in the US, Europe and some other parts of the world, starting 20th of this month. As always, the India shipping will take some more time. The UK price is said to be £549 for the 16GB model, £629 for the 32GB model and £709 for the 64GB model. Hence, you can expect the Indian base model to cost about INR 44,000.

    I feel Apple simply wasn’t prepared. Probably next years iphone would have something like a 6″ screen or something. Considering that their screens processors batteries come from korean vendors, why dint apple launch the latest 1080p screen, bigger batteries, 13 mp cam etc? Overpriced rubbish is what apple has become.

    Every phone has a feature that attracts attention of media and crowd ofcourse. Whether Lumia or Galaxy Grand or mega( i wouldn’t say s4). We expected the same from apple but unfortunately, this wasn’t true. Totally worst iPhone ever seen. Except universal frequency support, it has nothing.

    For those, who say, apple phone runs smooth like butter, then why didn’t you opt Lumia 520. It runs without any lag and is a value of money @9000. I agree, android runs worst on RAM <1 GB.

    Innvotion is seen only in Nokia even if you agree with it or not. I mean they have only innovated 41Mp camera, wireless charging and lots of other features. Why Apple, which used to be a such a great inventor is lagging behind

      I agree with you on that even i am nokia fan (infact i am writing this comment with my nokia X2-01)and a windows phone fan too but what keeps me away from windows phonw is the lack of availability of apps.Once if windows is able to sort out this problem no one can stop it from being the best mobile OS.

    I completely agree with you apple is not like other companies which blindly want to win the specs war reason why apple does not use a quad core processor and only a dual core is because dual core consumes less power and mind it that its a 64 bit processor so its much more faster than the one on iphone 5 and the reason why apple is not going in for a 1080p display is because the human eye cannot distinguish a lot between 720p and 1080p screens and why do ppl keep complaining about low end specs on the iphone however it is it runs much smoother than samsungs touchwiz and runs all apps without a hiccup,as a matter of fact the galaxy s4 and s3 cannot play 10 bit hd videos whereas the iphone 5 can.

        Pricing will always remain an issue with apple i agree with you that the iphone 5C is not cheap if you see by history the price of iphone 5 should have automatically reduced by 100 dollars and shud have come at 550 dollars once the iphone 5s releases but the original iphone 5 would have come with a unibody aluminium but iphone 5 has been dicontinues and rather iphone 5c is available with a polycarbonte back for 550 dollars so yes thats unfair

          Apple A6 processor in iPhone 5 uses PowerVR SGX 543MP3 GPU. This cannot match the performance of Adreno 330 from Qualcomm or Geforce from Nvidia. Even Intel is abandoning PowerVR and going for Intel HD Graphics in upcoming Intel Bay Trail Processor.

      If a human eye cannot distingush between 720p and 1080p, then he need to see an eye specialist.

      As per the latest research, human eye can distinguish even above 8K. Have you seen the latest 4K bravia TV’s? If you saw it you won’t be saying this.

        i think you are the most confused person i have ever seen your are comparing a 84″ display with 4″ display. do you know ppi ( pixels per inch ).
        a human i can’t see more 300 pixels in a inch and iphone have 326 so if somebody provide 500 he is just fooling you by showing his specs and one more thing you comparing iphone with nokia 520 atleast you should consider 920.

          Galaxy users were exicited with display quality of S4 1080p display. Likewise Xperia, HTC, LG users find the new 1080p display amazing compared to 720p displays. But apple users are blind as they cannot see beyond 300ppi.

    1 British pound = Rs 100.

    So 16GB = Rs 54,900
    32GB= Rs 62,900
    64GB= Rs 70,900
    *6% Import duty and taxes extra in India.

    16GB microSD cost Rs 500 and 32GB cost Rs 1000. But 16GB more on iPhone will cost Rs 8000. 32GB more will cost 16,000. No wonder Apple never add a card slot on iPhone or any of its device.

      64GB= Rs 44624

      prices are in dollar not in pound.

        Even 2 year old iPhone 4S cost Rs 40,000 on flipkart.

          micromax funbook is also sold in uk 150 pound means it will cost us 15000.

            In this article it is clearly written “The UK price is said to be £549 for the 16GB model”. That is why I am saying again and again to read article first.

            £ this symbol stands for British pound. 1 Pound= Rs 100. So £549 = Rs 54,900. This price does not include any tax or 6% import duty in India.

            British price are higher than US price due to their duty and tax.

            You can no where get an iPhone 5S for Rs 34000 with or without tax.

    Worst (i)Phone ever launched.

    In the era of Quad core 2.3Ghz processor and 5″ 1080p displays with 13+MP cams, Apple choose to fight with same old Dual core processor and not even a 720p display. 15% larger 8MP cam is not that different.

    64bit not going to compliment for a Quad core 2.3Ghz. New 15% larger 8MP cam cannot stand against 13MP Galaxy S4 Cam or 20.7MP Xperia Z1 or 41MP Lumia 1020. How can someone look at iPhone 650p display after seeing 1080p display from Samsung and Sony? After all this, this stupid phone will be the worlds most expensive phone @ Rs 55,000 (not 44,000 as in this article, 1 British pound= Rs 100)

    Only innovation in iPhone 5S is its fingerprint reader. Apple will die with this launch.

      Its dual core with 1.2 Ghz. That’s why they didn’t say a word, due to shame. If it was a Quad core, they will all over it. Ram is 1GB, IOS is really light weight.

        thats just because quardcore heats up the device drains battery.and in dual core you wont find any lags. even iphone 5 runs gta vice city without any lag.

        @Tharun, whats the source of this info?
        every tech blog I’ve read says Apple never sheds any light on the number of cores in its processor or the clock speeds of the cores, nor does it speak about the RAM. Everywhere it says that one of the tech sites like Gsmarena will review that aspect once the phones actually start to ship, as of now the only thing we know for sure is that the A7 chip supports 64Bit architecture which is desktop standard.

          Its simple logic. If they had a Quad Core 2Ghz processor, they will definitely brag about it instead of saying so much about 64bit. Another truth is IOS don’t need Quad core or 2GB Ram. Even latest Lumia have 15.GHz dual core.

          I bet it will have same old dual core with 1.2Ghz or max 1.5Ghz.

          Check this article at Times of India “A7 processor in iPhone 5S not revolutionary: Analyst”.

          There are currently no apps that can use 64bit advantage. As we seen on desktop 64bit main advantage is 4GB+ RAM, which iPhone never going to need. As seen on desktop, only big software like OS, Office, Photoshop use 64bit. But daily use software like chrome, Mozilla don’t comes with 64bit even after all these years. So I don’t think any app will come in 64bit.

          Qualcomm, Samsung are planing to release 64bit ARM processor next years, but are for servers.

      it’s upon you that you wanna buy it or not but i would definitely cause the built quality processing speed and screen quality is awesome you can’t compare it with crap android in which in 45000′s galaxy S4 will hangs and one more thing now iphone 5s and 5c supports india lte networks.

      lets wait whether reliance jio provide the same contract scheme as USA to by a iphone or not if they yes then india will be a more bigger market then USA for india.

      in USA iphone 5C is available at $99 down payment means if the same happen in india then we will get it for 6000 with 2 year operator contract.

      remember that Mts already did that in india.
