3G Plans in India – September 2012 Comparison Chart

In India 3G came late compared to other developed countries, it has been 3 years 3G had been launched in India, but 3G services are yet to be a mass adopted technology unlike 2G is a massive hit. On 3G the main USP is data services i.e. high speed internet.

Though initially 3G was very costly, but recently all operators cut down 3G prices to make it affordable. The PSU duo BSNL and MTNL often offer better value for data plans than private 3G operators.

Let’s check out September 2012′s 3G data plan comparison chart.

* BSNL is providing 25 % extra data as promotional offer on voucher Rs.225 & Rs.360 during next 3 months too. BSNL offers pan India free data roaming including Delhi and Mumbai on MTNL’s network.

# Tata Docomo has seperate plans for mobile and Photon 3G data cards as well as speed based plans.

MTNL is not taken into the table, as it is available only in Delhi and Mumbai.

Conclusion: On low end packs BSNL rocks, while Aircel is also offering cheaper packs which include unlimited 2G access, so its now the user to decide which to opt wisely. Do let us know which operator 3G you prefer and why.

Yes u r rit.Today i went in BSNL office ulhasnagar- 4 for EVDO plan inquiry i surprised after they showed me plans on register written by pen as they don’t have pamplate. That lady don’t have time to talk to people on bases of whom she is getting salary.BSNL should take serious action against such employees who don’t care about new customers.

  • Rampal September 22, 2012 4:27 pm

BSNL can be the best of all, if their employees do their job nicely. EVDO is best of all.

  • S Maharajan September 22, 2012 3:08 pm

Except internal coverage[that too for complying with the radiation norms]state run BSNL provides excellent service in both voice and Data.

  • Nikhileshwar September 22, 2012 11:18 am

BSNL is also giving Promotional offer for UNLIMITED 3G DATA in Post paid plan Rs 700/Month with Free 3.6 Mbps Data card.

My Remote desktop connection is disconnecting frequently in Aircel. For that i need a constant speed above 4mbps.

BSNL tariff is the most lowest tariff in 3G.and speed also in cochin city.

  • Dinakar September 21, 2012 8:46 pm

BSNL Tariff is reasonable when compared to Other networks but the signal is worst. Internet speed is very very low in 3g. Always disconnects.

  • RENJUCOOL September 21, 2012 8:01 pm

My Aircel datacard(Huawei E1732) is giving too low speed(180kbps-500kbps) with Aircel 3g. I recharged for 697 and you people promised upto 7mbps, but im not even getting upto 1mbps(Checked in speedtest.net).The same datacard Im using Vodafone 3G,its giving constantly speed above 5mbps and good ping. Even Aircel having speed ,its pinging is too low, I cant watch youtube.I’m now regretting why i take Aircel.

Note: I called Aircel customer care several times, they told to close all the application, uninstall datacard software. Nothing worked out,the speed is pathetic.

Yesterday I was reading an article in a leading daily regarding Airtel’s changing times and it highlights that company is shifting its focus from only being a voice to a voice-cum-data operator. Until Tata Docomo brought price war in data segmets, Airtel and other companies were fully concentrated on voice segment but now they are getting serious regarding data segment.

The article also tells that only 5 percent of Airtel users are on 3G which comes at around 9 million. It would’ve been much lesser in case company wasn’t in any roaming pact for pan-India 3G except Orrisa. In case DoT stops ICRA, it will hit Airtel hard as they will be limited to 13 circles only. Beside this companies will start losing customers to those who holds 3G license in particular circle.

So the question arises how can companies manage to provide cheaper data services to consumers in such a hard hitting times when you are burdened by numerous regulatory actions?

Airtel’s Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said recently that company is going through worst in 18 years and I think they are themselves very much responsible for their position today.

With so much of regulations, telecom sector is on the verge of moving into darkness with little ray of hope. The days of consumer being the king are near its end.

Companies know very well that if they want to survive, price hike, lesser commissions to retailers, stoppage of freebies are the need of the hour. Soon we will see prices being stable or hiking at regular intervals and competition getting lesser and lesser and now is the best time to do it. Telcos will face migration of some users to other operators but if all keep the same prices there will be either less or no migration. In some cases users will migrate only for better quality.

    pinaki roy :
3g is not popular in our country due to poor 3g handsets. what will you do with a 3g connection when your handset has no front camera-means no video call, not support mobiletv application, only umts, no hsdpa-means only 384kbps speed!

So whom you expect to buy the handset? If consumers wants to use 3G they will have to upgrade their handsets. Now a days HSPA handsets with 10.2Mbps downlink speed is available for as low as Rs.4-5K or if someone can’t upgrade they can go for cheaper option like buying a USB dongle.

As far as Mobile TV is concerned, you have to have a smartphone for it and Android phones are easily available starting Rs.3100 only and if you shell out some more bucks you can have a decent phone with bigger screen. Some java phones released in last 1-2 years also allowing tv streaming via web content providers like Zenga.

So having a 3G or upgrading your handset or their pricing is not a issue now. But I always doubt longevity of cheap handsets and especially the ones from Micromax.

Recently a survey conducted suggests that majority of Indian Internet consumers don’t want to pay for hardware which includes Modems, Dongles and Mobile phones but I can see trend changing with more and more people buying smartphones and USB dongles for Internet Access. But mass-adoption will take time.

Very big news tata docomo network has gone off I’m not getting any network from around 7 pm I am on aircel network now and no outgoing call being made by this aircel network same on other docomo Sim

  • ravin September 20, 2012 8:34 pm

My experience in Hyderabad is Aircel is the best and far more reliable than BSNL. The BSNL 3G service has plummeted recently with not even connecting when needed. BSNL is destined to for dustbin. Airtel is very costly even with Rs 151 (500 mb 3g and 500 mb 2g offer) due to its high voice tariff. So people are going for Aircel to voice calls too despite its poor performance in this front, as these days data is as essential as voice what with all these surge in smart phones and needs of the section of population which spends much.

Aircel is the best for me when it comes to 3G & also Overall 2g voice tariffs.
No worries about data getting exhausted n balance deduction, cheapest tariff in karnataka with good network quality n coverage.

Even though i was an Airtel customer i find quality of aircel almost same as airtel but aircel lags in coverage which the company claims that its expanding rapidly.
3G speed is better than Airtel.

  • MUTHUKUMAR September 20, 2012 2:15 pm

Except 2GB per month Aircel is even cheaper than BSNL with unlimited 2G data. If aircel improves and expands their 3G network then they can do better than BSNL 3G. All other operators must revise their plans with unlimited 2G data like Aircel or atleast with some speed limitation like 512 or 384 or 256 or 128.

  • vy65 September 20, 2012 2:12 pm

    1.Well 1 GB in 76(7 days)means 4 GB for 304
    2.15 GB for 1200 month
3.No limit if you are ready to pay 1650 for a month and 2500 for 2 month

If you are comparing a 3G plan then you cant ignore these plans after all Mtnl is also in india and they are also in competition with others in mumbai and delhi

    My opinion :

All the 3G plans of Airtel, Vodafone and IDEA are the most costly.

    (1) BSNL and Aircel are the cheapest
    (2) Reliance 3G is the second cheapest after (1).

  • Nilay September 20, 2012 2:05 pm

Aircel 3G plans are pocket friendly…

  • Varun September 20, 2012 2:00 pm

Well that’s all about, but where’s MTNL in the chart. Missing it out. It provides very good service in Mumbai, which I use it daily. RELIANCE 3G is Best for me. Get a new connection and Recharge Rs. 600 to get 6 GB for 90 days at 2GB / month.

Also, with New Offer, get 5GB with 90 days validity at Rs. 597.

Speeds are Best and better than BSNL 3G n Aircel.

  • Anirban Das September 20, 2012 1:23 pm

BSNL is totally unfaithful, not clearly depend upon time, location . Can give 3G speed using 2G Net recharge, and Can give 2G speed even 3G Pack activated.
So, Before going to recharge large amount, 1st check it by using small recharge pack at your location.

Please consider, MTNL as well. The reason is though the same is avaialbe in Mumbai and Delhi only, but all plans are roam free plans, so it can be used any part of the india. Also some one can buy sim from mumbai or delhi and can use anypart of india. Let me tell you that MTNL only have unlimited 3G plan without FUP Rs. 2500 for 2 month and 1600 for one months. No operator has such plan. Also 200GB for 6 month for Rs. 4800. Pls consider the same as well.

I think Aircel tariff & Reliance Tariffs are interchanged..
